Hi Andre nice try with the new software toy. Check out your e-mail sent you a link to a new toy , cost nothing , but you should be quick ............

Actually i think this is a toned image , Steve once told me if there is a hint of color , it is no longer B/W . And i do see, if my eyes are not lying , some green /blue/ magenta very slightly creeping through.
The detail look very nice in the trunk , like wise the tones . Then comes a fall off in detail and tones . Is that what you wanted to achieve ?
If so i think the image does look a bit tight with the trunk quite close to the edge.It would be great to have more room above .

It is a good start to play with this really nice working piece of software .

I like this Andre! Good DOF, texture, tone and contrast. Really nice job.
Even the bokeh in the BG adds to it. The little blade of grass, doesn't .

I think the terms B&W/monochrome are used interchangeably by the majority of photographers these days to refer to any image that is not outrightly colour. Be that right or wrong, this definition dug up somewhere online seems to fit my way of using the word "monochrome":

A monochrome is an image that contains only one colour, but may have different shades of that colour. Most commonly shades of grey ranging from black to white, but it can be any colour, for example traditional colours such as sepia or cyanotype or more modern renditions such as pink or puce.

Hi Andre, I might try just using PS conversion to B/W and then use the sliders to create your contrast overall within the image or just saving the final item as a grey scale tiff. Personally I think it could stand a bit more tone, going slightly darker in some areas so it conveys a contrast. I like the texture of the trunk, almost like crape paper, but I wonder if it needed more DoF? I might try a 5 x 4 format based on the height as presented and working right to left so you loose a little off the LHS? The grass stalk is a little distracting, likewise he white spec on the top of the head RHS. If you have it, then a little more above would be good and a little more breathing space for that inquisitive trunk.

Hi Andre - Great texture and detail coming through, particularly in the trunk. I'm going to go against the grain and say that I am ok with the tightness because it emphasizes the trunk which I think is what you wanted to do. Interesting discussion about monochrome and b&w. If it were mine I would burn the ele's left tusk (right as we look at it) slightly.

Lovely image, Andre - I especially like the detail that comes through in the trunk. The others have pointed out the things that caught my eye and those are easy fixes (e.g., grass in lower RHS, blown spec on top right, etc.). I also agree that it seems a tad tight on the top, so if this is not FF then I would back off a bit on the crop along the top if you think it would improve the image overall.

I like the more space on top. Also a tad darker?

Hi Andrelakis - The repost is definitely an improvement on a great image Love the trunk pose. Reminds me of Shangaan when he smells out the 'cats'. Good work on removing the grass.
