Green Woodpecker
Green Woodpecker
Finally got him in the right place but the brighter light behind was a bit of a problem. This bird has insatiable appetite for apples. he spent a great amount of time on the tree- even scrapping with the other stuff after the fruit
D200 Sigma 50-500 mm. Hide /Scaffold. Was photographing a Missle Thrush on Mistletoe when this turned up, and had 15 species on the apples ina ll.

Thanks for comments on last pic.
Great image John, well captured, the colours on the bird are very nice. It has that Autumn feeling about it, in an English country garden I have never seen one this year. Well done mate
Great capture John - there is a lot to take in and one is left with no doubts about the photographic narrative. However, I am finding the apples just as interesting as the bird! I know you are not one to fiddle too much in post processing but in this case I wonder if lifting the brightness of the bird a whisker and pulling back the brightness of the rest of the image a tad would be helpful in focusing more attention on the woodpecker and less on the apples? Regards, Ian.
The re-post looks better. I like this one as the WPs pose is focused on the prize at hand and it looks nice and sharp. I like the apples and the shape and color they bring to the shot. Just the right distance from the BG to produce a nice blur but not take away from the habitat. Well done John

What a belter a shot that obviously required planning and it paid off tremendously. Well done, love the pose. (I am unashamedly jealous, I have never managed a decent shot of a green woodpecker - ever).
I have a personal preference to the original post. Excellent scene, with a unique take on the woodpecker. I love that the branches are on a vertical axis. I do wish the upper left corner was not sky but rather more like the rest. A very striking image!!
This is a nice WP specie, I still donīt know why the name of this bird!!!
Very nice image ideed. You did your best with the ingredients you had at the moment.
I like it very much John. I think the original has some softer tones which I like more. Love the setting with the apples. They are rare in the Netherlands and I still have to photograph my first one. Great looking woodpecker.
Another wonderful image with a very artistic feeling! I could go with something about halfway in between the two posts. The first is a bit low in contrast and, although I like the color, it does come across as a slight color cast.
Since John's software is unable to embed profiles (although they are in sRGB), some browser and monitor combinations may not be showing the colors correctly. Open the images in PS and you should get a message that there is no profile. (If not, check your Color Settings.) If you Assign sRGB you will then see it correctly.
Jhon, to me this looks more like a painting than an image. I liked both the versions of the image. I agree with Ian,
the apples are also very interesting. A super image.
