A lazy rock Hyrax basks on a rock in the early morning light. Funny little things they are, very cute though. I tried the NIK sharpener on this one, not sure how that worked out, what do you guys think?

They are cute. Love the little teeth showing. Light is nice...Colour and details look fine, could perhaps stand some more light facial sharpening?
I'm not fond of the large frame, I feel it detracts from viewing and critiquing the image itself
    Where was this one photographed?

Thanks Morkel. With mammals I always struggle with the sharpening because the fur always looks oversharpened even after a little sharpening, birds are easier for me. How do you sharpen? About the frame, I use the frame for posting on another forum and facebook, and got lazy and didn't feel like redoing the whole for web workflow just for birdphotographers haha, but I will keep note of the lack of fan fare for the frame for next time :)

    Fair enough .
I use Smart Sharpen in PS CC at minimal amounts, 125% @ 0.2px, once or twice on selected areas. I agree fur can look oversharpened easily, you can use a mask to paint through to get the effect exactly right.

Funny, similar to my usual sharpening, I do smart sharpen at 100 amount and .2 radius 2 to 3 times usually (for birds and wildlife, for landscapes I have a special action I use), I tried NIK for my latest stuff and its not bad, will try to compare it with smart sharpen sometime.

    Hello Dvir!

Great to see you posting in Wildlife, and I am also curious - where did you shoot this?

I like the positioning of the subject within the frame and the colours look natural to me (we do have Hyraxes here in SA). I too feel it needs another round of sharpening.

I like the slightly raised paw and the little protruding teeth...Cute!

If I may ask, what was your shutter speed?

Hope you post again in this forum, enjoyed viewing -thank you!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Thank you :)

the shutter speed is 1/1000s, the shot is sharp and all if that is what you wanted to know from the shutter speed. I just struggle with sharpening fur and barley sharpened the shot as I hate the look sharpening gives fur.

This was taken in Israel, we (I am from Israel but do not live there at the moment) have them in abundance here as well. Mostly in the north Golan heights were there are a lot of volcanic rocks that they can hide in, similar to the rocky kopje of africa.

Hi Dvir - Interesting about them being in Israel. I didn't know that. Nice light and I like the simplicity of the image. You've gotten some good suggestions above.

Smashing looking mammal which does look like it needs a tad more sharping ,I'm with you regarding the amount of sharping needed on fur, stiil a very nice piece of work.
