    Default trumpeter swan portrait

A pair of trumpeter swans was very tolerant of me, and came even closer to feed on some greens. They didn't quite come closer than my minimal focus distance, but close enough to make framing and dof a challenge. They were less tolerant of a family coming down the path (perhaps it was the loud colors on the shoes), and soon left.

Nice clean portrait of this Swan. Techs look good and I like the colors. Maybe just a bit more sharpening for the web. Is this a juvie? Well done

Thanks for the kind comments. David, I think it might be a juvie: the pair seemed smaller than trumpeters I have seen previously, but there were no others around to compare them to. I don't know the history of these particular swans. At this site a pair of mute swans drive the trumpeters away at breeding time. The rangers destroy the mute swan eggs each year; there are other local ponds where trumpeters nest, so eventually when the mutes superannuate we should have nesting trumpeters here.

Hi Ron, I feel your comp works well, and well exposed on the blacks of the beak.

Nice portrait! Good HA. Great detail on the blacks and the rather "dirty" neck shows that these birds have to work for their food! (BTW, this is an adult... IMM's would still be a rather dirty gray this time of year.)
