Taken one minute past midnight on the outskirts of Nome. Almost passed on shooting these guys, go figure
Nikon D4, 500mm, 1/400 @ F4, ISO 1250, Hand held. Not near as sharp as the original.

Luvit! It has a nice quiet and surreal feel about it. You've said it about the green cast - should not be difficult to rectify!

    Dear Roy,

A very special sighting indeed, colour casts aside I would like to know why the processed version is "not near as sharp as original"??? Since PP work is meant to fix, to some extent, such problems. Is this a big crop?

I use similar equipment, in my experience one needs a shutter speed of at least 1/500s when using a 500 lens. Also, the D4 can handle much higher ISO, would love to see you experiment a bit more, looking forward to more images from you

    Kind regards,

Love these animals and their habitat. Nice to see some posted on here again. OP didn't look to bad to my eye but the repost looks better with the warmer tone.

    Thanks Tobie, Gabriela and Steve.
Gabriela, Sorry I was unclear in my comments. I was referring to the original jpeg as viewed on my monitor nor the raw image. No it's not a big crop and you are right about the capabilities of the D4 and I routinely use much higher ISO when shooting. As I said in my original post I almost passed these series of shot as it was late and I was tired, not used to the routine of shooting in Nome. I just grabbed the camera and shot with the settings I had previously set.

    Hi Roy

This is a nice picture, with a good feeling to it. Sharp enough for me ;) Love how the light falls in the eyes, the eye contact and the winter fur coming off.

Hi Roy, nice to see something different and I like the fact you have them in moulting mode. The time of day has given some nice lighting IMHO and I like the contrast between the FG & BKG.

Just quickly looking at the OP it's not that far off, just adjusting slightly the WB more to the right, albeit it a fraction and reducing the Blue by say -25 you get a very good starting point to build on. You have nice detail, but the coat does look a tad noisy for he D4, did you lighten or use Shadow/Highlight at all? In parts the shadows are marginally chocked, but again easily resolved in the RAW conversion. I like the colour version, but you also have options of a nice Duo/Quad tone depending on a cooler or warmer look. I might suggest a more pano 16 x 9 crop loosing more above and bringing a bit more focus to the subjects WDYT?

    TFS
    Steve
