    Default Hippos

Taken at about 9:45 am at Londolozi in the Sabi Sands. The hippos were not very cooperative but he at least lifted up a little for this image.

    Canon 7D
    300 II
    1/500
    f7.1
    ISO 800
HH on foot at the edge of the waterhole, cropped from the rhs to remove part of another hippo, levels, curves, selective color adjustments, sharpened in CCPS.

I also have an alternate more pano version with some cropped from the top.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Beautiful detail, Rachel! To be honest I prefer the pano but I'd take away 15% more at the bottom so they're not in the middle of the frame!

I must say I prefer the second crop. Outstanding IQ and details usual, good eye contact. I must say I feel like its needing a CW rotation...Nice one Rachel

I agree that it might need a bit of CW rotation and I also prefer the pano version.

The colours and detail are lovely here. I do find the choppy water a little distracting from the subject. Could you tone that down slightly with some brushed-in negative contrast or clarity?

Otherwise I think this is great and you got a second hippo in the frame which actually adds to the image, rather than being a distraction.

You've extracted some nice detail and colour on this pair here Rachel, I do prefer your pano crop but just a little less central as per Tobie's suggestion, I do feel that the water
ripples are competing with the image overall and might be difficult to reduce that a great deal.

Hi Rachel very nice overall , i quite like it .
Good suggestions already given by the guys , specially Ed .

To answer your question what i did with Carl`s elephants , i did the same with this ....

In PS : new empty layer - apply image - red channel inverted to the empty layer - high pass filter with 5 px radius - set layer blend mode to soft light - mask out what should not be affected - set opacity to taste - in this case 66 % opacity.

Hope that helps , WDYT ?

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Rachel, I might look at the old 16 x 9 after a slight CW rotation (visually) based on the front snout, but give yourself as much space as possible to the right. Think you can squeak a bit more 'tonality' back into the image.

Thanks Steve, the pano is 16x9 format. I'll take a look at the tones and rotation tonight.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

OK, then you will come in if you decide to rotate, you'll get the picture if you try it.
