    Default Elk bull close portrait

Hi all, photographed this Elk bull in Jasper NP.This guy was quite relaxed getting close to shot this .
But between him and me was a guardrail , and i was sitting in my car .For better safety for both of us.

Had to choose this crop , even if looking a bit odd , because the rail was too close and in the frame.

    EOS 1Dx
    Ef 24 - 105 IS L at 96 mm
    HH

    F 5,6 ; Iso 3200 ; 1/200 sec with hindsight i should have gone for F 8 .

Processed with DPP 4 and PS CC .

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous thread .

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas - I was going to yell at you for being so close that you could shoot this with a 24-105 then I saw that you were in your car with a guardrail between you. Whew! Though some of the big bulls have done a lot of damage to cars during the rut in Yellowstone. Nice tones, color and detail. Dof looks ok but you may be right that it would have been better at f8 or 7.1. I would prefer a little bit more below to where the darker coat ends but not a deal breaker since this is more about the 14 point rack.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Great BG, love the tree's and mountains and the head on pose is nice. I think there could be more space at the bottom (if you have it) and take some off the top. Rachels comment re DOF makes sense but I suppose you were already at a high ISO and I can see the effect of the current ISO showing through in the IQ. TFS Andreas

Shame about the guard rail being close and the pine tree coming out of the head here Andreas, so doesn't quite do it for me I'm sorry buddy.

Thanks Rachel and Dumay for your comments.
Sadly no more usable room on bottom , the area you referred to is covered with shrub/grass and guardrail.

Dumay what are you seeing that makes you think it is a HIGH ISO shot ? The RAW is not 100 % pin sharp and the lens is not as sharp at the low f stops , so tried to overcome that by adding a tiny bit of detail enhancement , maybe that is causing what you see .I do not know , maybe the Rack was too close and i shivered a bit while pressing the shutter .

    Thanks again Andreas

Thanks Marc for your comment , no problem if you do not like this , but the pines have been there and the Elk was standing there ..........

Hi Andreas, I like it, although yes, a bit more image content below would have been good, however...

Like the colours and yes if it's a fraction off then nothing you can do sadly. Nice to see the Pines and the river in the BKG, plus the slight sway of his thick, fur collar. it's a stunning location in both Summer & Winter, just prefer Banff as a hub to work out of, but the drive is gorgeous between the two.

What a rack!! DOF is fine for me as I wouldn't want the BG trees/etc more detailed/defined than they are. Just-just avoided having the tree "grow out of his head" too

Thanks Steve and Morkel for your comments , sadly nothing i could have done re "growing trees out of the head " or more below as described above. If i would have changed position i would have lost the frontal view on eye level. .
Later on he showed me .............. clearly i should move , what i did.
Steve why do you prefer Banff ? I heard when i was there less chances for wildlife in Banff area , from Chas and Greg D.

Difficult to pull off eye level portraits of these guys when their antlers are so tall. Colors look right and you also got some nice detail in the antlers themselves. I think centering the tree right in the middle of the antlers would've been kind of a cool look.
