Beautiful over-the-shoulder angle. With your gear, I expect the bird to be a bit sharper under these conditions and I see a tiny bit of noise in the background. Neither of these is a big deal in this image and are probably the result of the way you have processed the image. Most people posting here would select the bird using their preferred method/tools and then select the inverse and apply a little noise reduction to the background. The particular NR tool you use will not matter much, my preference in this situation is the median filter with radius about 3 pixels. Make sure you save the selection because you will need it after downsizing the image. At this point re-select the bird and apply a little output sharpening, this can be USM or if you use PS, I suggest you try the sharpening tool set to remove Gaussian blur with radius about 0.3 pixel, amount 50. Good thoughts from Ian. I'd remove the stray feather under the top beak, but you and others might prefer it for authenticity.

Very nice portrait with great head angle and good enough sharpness around the head and neck which it is important. I would run a bit of noise reduction to the background.

Thanks for the very useful feedback from all - I now realize that the background, especially, has some very distracting noise, which I plan to work on. Unfortunately my Photoshop style skills are relatively weak, so Ian's post processing suggestions are going to be a bit of a challenge for me, but I'll certainly give it a whirl. Many thanks again

Hi Bill, great head turn and open beak, and I like the detail and colours on the head. The Merlin does pop against your smooth BG. Good points from Ian.

Bill, that is a very nice pose. BG noise doesn't bother me much, I would like a little more sharpening though, specially on the beak and eye....
