This image was also on a cloudy morning at Nickerson beach, 8-20-14 at 7:16am. Again I used the Gitzo 3532 LS carbon fiber tripod, the Mongoose M3.6 head, the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens, the Canon Extender EF 2X III, and the Canon EOS-1D X. ISO 1250. Evaluative metering +2 stops off the pure white sand: 1/125 sec. at f/10 in Manual mode.

Central Sensor (by necessity)/AI Servo-Expand/Rear Focus AF on the face of the chick and re-compose. When you add the 2X TC to an f/4 lens with the 1DX or the 5D III hit the MFn button once to toggle to AF Expand and enjoy 4 extra AF sensors. Learn everything there is to know about the 1D X and 5D III AF systems including how to manage the various AF Area Selection Modes, when to use which one, and several ways to move the AF sensor around in the 1D X AF Guide and the 5D Mark III User’s Guide. Click here to see the latest version of the Rear Focus Tutorial. Click on the image to see a larger version.

I took a whole lot of wishing and hoping and praying and dreaming to get everything lined up :). You can read the whole story in Friday's blog post: "Hard to See and They Usually Last Only for a Few Seconds; What Are They?" And you will learn a bunch to boot.

As for the image, don't be shy: all comments are welcome and appreciated. Microscopic and LAB color analyses are not needed :)

Wow. That's a piece of Art. Very well thought out and executed. A nice vision to capture the adult as well. I look forward to reading about it in the blog.

    Well seen and beautifully captured!

Parts of the chick look a tad over-sharpened to me on my Imac screen.

Very well seen and nice and creative. I like the OOF Skimmer (I think) and the plant in the front. I must say the IQ on the chick is poor and I agree with mike it looks like its been over sharpened to sort it out.

Cool, artistic image Arthur! Pity that the IQ on the chick does not look great but love the idea and it is definitely visually appealing. TFS

Very artistic and unusual; the photo is naturally telling a story.
