These guys are not always as photogenic as they can be...

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1000s., f/8, ISO 400, natural light, handheld, cropped for composition, lightly lifted the shadows on the shaded side of the heron.

Perhaps this is more 'anatomical' Dan?

hahahaha nice one! Good example of a herons innards! Was it simply stretching or regurgitating some food?

I think he might be trying to tell you something Daniel - you have been in this guy's face quite a bit lately. Cheers, Ian.

The doctor in me thinks the anatomy is pretty cool but the artist in me says "yuk"!!!
Looks like some of his prey did not go down without a bit of a fight as I see 2 small lacerations on the herons' left side (vallecula is what that area is called in humans)

Hi Dan, pretty close to a muppet, but what outrageous detail you have managed to capture here - incredible. Love the 'squint' show of the eye, and just love Doctor Gail's description. A different image to the norm, certainly works for me, and I would take this further.

That is an interesting shot for sure. Different is the least to say:). Nice one, Dan.

    Thanks guys!
Shane, I think it was trying to dislodge something as it was also shaking its head side to side rigorously. Perhaps some downy feathers stuck down there after a preening session :-)

Yikes! looks like an alien parasite is about to come out of it's throat. I have never seen this behavior before, so good job catching it. Pretty funny.
