Default Wild Dogs - A Wider View

Another from our sighting of the wild dogs playing at the waterhole. This time a wider view as several were at the edge of the water. We must have been on top of a hill or termite mound for this one because most of the time we were at the water's edge. This is about 1/3 of the pack.

HH from safari vehicle, cropped to pano, luminosity mask, levels, curves, selective color adjustments, sharpened in CCPS.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Hi Rachel, LOL, just started to process a WD image, wider view.

Overall I feel the image looks thin, another 'selective' luminosity mask around 80-85% I think helps both the water and selectively the vegetation in the BKG, adds more depth. It also looks a bit yellow? The pano for works well and the slight curvature of the water adds. I assume the ISO was from hen the dogs were playing? I like the different pose/aspect of each dog, they are not all doing the same thing.

Hi Rachel , quiet nice wide view with the WD spread out across the frame all doing different stuff/positions.
I like the colors and the comp , but think it is not that nicely processed as other images from you , like the Mother Ellie with youngster .
It looks a bit thin as Steve observed and i think the blacks/shadows does look choked up in the WD and bushes , should be possible to to open up.

Love the overall scene here Rachel showing good habitat, perhaps biased but love all scenes with WD in them.
agree with Steve & Andreas on their points, would like to see just a very small CCWR.

Thanks Steve and Andreas - I'll take a look at the yellows and the tones. This was not the best light angle and shadows were somewhat harsh. Steve - this was before the dogs were playing when they were just getting up from their snooze. I think Dean raced around to the other side and at first pulled up on the termite mound there and then when they headed our way we repositioned next to the mound at water level.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

I like the content but it looks a little yellow to me and possibly a little anticlockwise rotation. I appreciate the light is what you get but I would consider lightening the darker areas on the dogs just to see what the effect would be.

    Sweet!

Dearest Rachel, this makes me think of a relaxing day at the beach I can only imagine your joy watching this...

I too feel this needs a bit of rotation, judging by the tree line at the back. Not sure about the colour yellow, it really depends on how much you want to please your audience. Andre here next to me also says he would drop the yellows just a tad. To my mind, this was shot in the winter when the vegetation turns yellow this time of the year. The colour of the dogs looks natural to me, the water colour also. The light came from the LHS and you had some shadows to deal with - I would perhaps lift the shadows further on some of the dogs. Lovely animalscape and I really wish I was there to see them wild dogs with my own eyes, they are everywhere around Hluhluwe but we did not see them in a long time, only hear of their whereabouts...

Can't wait to see what else you have in your folders Rachel

Thanks Jonathan and Gabriela. Here's a repost trying to follow all of the suggestions and I also added a bit of sat to and darkened the greens as well. I'm still struggling with the shadows, finding that point between showing a bit of detail but still looking natural. WDYT?

Thanks again everyone for the comments and suggestions,
    Rachel

I understand about the shadows, Rachel.
I must admit the RP does work very well, I also like the sky more. I can see you lifted the shadows on the dogs a bit, this is IT for me, no more no less .And I also see you cropped a tad from the RHS In terms of colour overall, the RP is more pleasing indeed - not sure this is what it looked like at the time you took the shot, but what is important is that you achieved a more balanced image and the warmth does make it more attractive - great work

    Warmest regards,

Thanks Gabriela. The crop on the right was incidental to straightening the image. I'm not sure this accurately conveys the scene either but I'm ok with it.

Hi Rachel, it must have been a thrilled to see that many dogs playing near the water. I think this is a difficult image to pull off. The dogs were on the far side, so they look small and the light was a bit harsh. Agreed that the OP was bit yellow. The RP tried to take care of the harsh light, but i think it is a bit too dark and is probably not reflecting the time of day. I would suggest taken cared of the yellow in the OP, but not darken the scene so much. TFS. Loi
