Default Common Tern Braking to Land

This image was created on the evening of July 28 at 7:20pm on Great Gull Island when a huge dark cloud covered the sun. I used the hand held Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens, Canon Extender EF 1.4X III, and the Canon EOS-1D X. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +2 2/3 stops off the very light blue sky: 1/1600 sec. at f/4 in Manual mode. AWB.

One sensor below the central sensor AI Servo/Center Zone AF caught the bird’s right foot and again the eye was very sharp. Again, AF was active at the moment of exposure.

Also of note is my Rear Focus Confession.

Great shot of this speedy Tern species.
Excellent pose with the nice head turn and the hanging down legs. The blurred wing tips suggest speed.
    Great to have green background.

Hey Artie, nice to see the full breeding plumage. Most of the terns here are showing white on the crown by now. Soft light and BG are nice. Amazing that the eye is sharp when the AF was on the foot!

Nice action pose Artie, i like how the subject shows off against the green BG. Where is that pinkish light coming from?

Thanks Shane. There was a bit of late, soft, sunlight from my left.... Good eye by you. The bird's left wing shows RGB #s with the REDs about 15 points more on average than the GREENs and BLUEs. On the right wing the WHITEs are a lot closer to neutral with the BLUEs about 3-5 points higher than the GREENs and the REDs.

Hi Artie, the vibrant green really sets the subject off well and makes for a nice contrast. I also like that the head is pin sharp, but you have motion blur in the wings. I just wondered about creating another option where you have lost the sky and replace it with the overall green, but go for a 16x9 format and use RoT's to place the subject agin, more to the top & right, similar to the OP?

Glad the day kept dry for you and you had 'some' reasonable light, not always guaranteed!

Beautiful shot, Artie! The Tern really stands against the beautiful green BG! Beautiful wing position and the blurred wing tips! TFS
