Default Green Heron With Fish Catch.

With such a tame subject some people frequenting this park may have wondered what I was doing lying on the ground and pointing such a long lens plus teleconverter at it from only 12 feet away! This heron is rather non-chalant about people photographing it and is hunting daily for prey at point-blank range. With this in mind I was envisioning a full-frame head-and shoulder portrait of it with its' catch in its' bill...this frame, and a few others, fulfilled that vision...

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure evaluative metering, 1/1250s., f/7.1, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, small crop to help the composition, blended in some harder vertical lines in the BG at top, toned down the fish's brighter highlights.

Your exposure and details are simply perfect, Daniel. Love the color combination. What makes this image so powerful is your choice of composition, then the color palette and the prey doesn't hurt either. :)

Wow Daniel! I was about to upload a Goliath Heron with a fish but this image puts me to shame, I am beginning to reconsider posting...Brilliant shot, perfectly exposed, tack sharp and fantastic colours, this is money shot!!!
Beautifully presented, this ticks all the boxes for me

    Warmest regards,

This is a mega-wow! Perfect head angle for both. The fish is perfectly positioned and is borderline surreal. So is the whole image! Where?

You might see how it looks with the midtones opened up a bit....

Excellent detail and wonderful colours, the timing couldn't have been better. The bird is pin sharp but so is the fish - quite remarkable.

Thank you everyone for the comments!

Artie, this is right here in Ottawa in a city park. It is right next to the Ottawa River and has two large ponds...lots of the typical (for our parts) Ring-billed Gulls, Mallards, and Canada Geese...but lots of other neat stuff shows up regularly there. Great spot during migration too.

Killer close up Dan. I know how tough it is to get a good head angle on both the bird and the fish.

    Well done!
