    Default Hyena Cub and Mom

    Attached Images Attached Images

Same hyena den as in Steve's post but one of the younger cubs. There seemed to be 3 different sets of cubs of varying ages from a few weeks to a few months. We checked the den quite a few times but had 2 more successful visits when there was a lot of activity in the late afternoon. This was on the second of those visits and we had timed it well to have the golden light hitting the den opening. With both in the same focal plane I was able to go a bit more traditional and have both in focus.

Love the lighting and pensive look both are giving you here Rachel, the FG grass stalks don't bother me, so no real issues that I can see.

Hi Rachel, isn't it great arriving at a planned location to find your subjects 'waiting' for you, or at least with some activity. Hyena cubs are quite inquisitive and normally walk up to game vehicles with no worries. Love the light in this, and what a cool pose from the cub, not to mention the lazy pose of the parent. You have brought out the detail nicely, and Yep, DOF pretty perfect. Im sure with your combo and the good light, you didnt have to apply much sharpening. Well captured.

Hi Rachel lovely image of these beasts , the youngster is looking so cute with a cool pose.
Nicely processed with nice colors and good detail , light was on your side at that location , good timing for the capture.
I might think about reducing the blues that are creeping in, in parts .
A very nice one all around .

Beautiful, Rachel! A serene scene so much in contrast of the ruffle & scuffle scenes where they fight for a piece of meal amongst one another, sometimes in competition with the king of the jungle himself! Lovely lighting and simply a nice scene!

Just stunning. I guess you might lose a sliver off the bottom, but otherwise, this is spot on. I like the little bit of grass on the RHS - too sterile without it.

Rachel, I don't like it-I LOVE IT! This has been my "screensaver" at work for a little while now - it motivates me to work hard so I can go and enjoy my photography in the Kalahari.

I would give anything to have this sighting, for I have a special interest in this species. Superb shot portraying an important aspect of spotted hyena behaviour (they really do take care of their young), I had taken a good look on the big screen at home, beautifully processed and composed, stunning light, and what a lovely moment captured!

I postponed commenting because I wanted to give you a more lengthy critique but I just did not get to do it, so sorry Rachel, this is indeed one of your best images from the SA trip so far and I wish to congratulate you - I love the emotional content here, it has great appeal to me (like most of your work).

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
