Default Red Deer Stag in rut with females

    Attached Images Attached Images

Hi folks , this stag was calling for a longer time in the back of the forrest during rutting season in Hooge Veluwe NP in the Netherlands .
As soon as the females came out to the open area , attracted by food supplied by a NP Ranger , the stags followed . But the males have been only attracted by the ladies , not by the food.

    He's onto something
I like the angle and sense of habitat - pity they weren't just a tad further from the BG treeline. Would f5.6 or even f4 not have helped get better separation while still getting most of them in focus at this distance?

Hi Andreas - Nice colors, tones and sense of habitat with some interesting interaction. I agree with Morkel that a bit more space between the deer and the tree line would have taken it up a notch. I'm surprised that the rangers feed the deer rather than just having them forage/graze in the park.

Hi Andreas, lovely colors and an impressive looking stag. I'm surprised how well the green BG was in focus at 500mm, so I agreed that a more separation of the animals and BG or a more open aperture would have been better. Loi

This works for me - there's interest in all the subjects and the colours are very nice. Having them slightly larger in the frame would have helped but that was a limitation that you couldn't control.

The interaction between the stag and the hind is interesting as is the behaviour of the other two hinds.

I too am surprised that they feed the deer. Is there a reason for it?

Thanks to all who commented and gave suggestion/feedback.
I would also like to have a better separation between subject and BKG , not sure if opening the aperture would have helped here.

Regarding feeding of the deer , actually i do not know , but think they do it for us to see the Deer rut , because there are cars/people lined up at that location. What i have heard is that the time window for the feeding is quite narrow , 14 days during the highest rutting .

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas, like the comp & format, I just wonder about a fraction more FG just to add a bit more balance to the ratio of trees to grass? Light looks a little harsh, but handled well, wish we could get that nice, soft, warm light Ed gets. I'm OK with the DoF as the subjects are too close to the trees to get that nice diffused BKG.

Thanks Steve , it is actually sand and shrub/grass mix in FG ,was busy in the closer FG , so i decided to get rid of it .
Regarding light agree with you , but was happy to get at least some sunlight later in the day , i had almost every day sun during the "boring" time of day , but when the time came for the Deer to enter the arena it was like someone turned off the light....... bang thick clouds and fog or sort of.

    Thanks again Andreas

    Hello Andreas!

Love to see the variety in your posts and great processing as usual, I really like the pano crop here and the green vegetation in the BG, great colours and nice behavioural shot, well done!!!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
