    Default Pricing question

I have just been commissioned to write an article about a nature reserve for a magazine that is issued by my state's tourism board. The circulation has just been increased to 200,000. They pay $1/word. They are asking me whether I want to supply photos and what my rate would be. Of course I would like to supply the photos, but I have no idea how much to charge. I don't want to price myself out of a job but I don't want to ask too little, either. I'll ask them to send me their photographers guidelines because right now I am unclear about copyright issues etc. Any advice on pricing such a job? I need to reply very soon.

Sounds like an interesting opportunity. Most resources I have come across dont have info for non-profits.

    This might help: http://www.asmp.org/commerce/estimator.php

    New link.

Take a look at www.alamy.com and their price calculator.

Ask them what their usual budget is for photos. I have found that a lot of publications are pretty forthcoming and if they are too low, you could tell them that it quite a bit too low for your usual and ask them if they could come up a bit. Remember, you never get what is right or you deserve, only what you negotiate.

After a lot of research and soul-searching, I quoted a not too outrageous price for a 1/4 page photo. The art director then called me and told me their day rate was $500. I happily agreed since I can sell the photos otherwise after one year.
By the way, I belong to Alamy but can't find the price calculator in their web site. Do you have to be a buyer to see it?

    Hi Doris,

You will need to register with the site, log in, select a photo and then click on the calculate a price link.

    Hope this helps.
