One from a series I photographed this summer when the southwest wind was howling up the beach....slowing these little speedsters down as they flew into it :)

    Nikon D2Xs, 500 AFSII lens and TC14EII @ f7.1, ISO 400

Good catch, Jim. These really are hard to get in flight. My only nit is BG noise and a sharpening halo, oh those are two nits. :)

Man, myeyes must be getting bad cause even onb my new 24"HP LCD I can't see a halo (new glasses really have been ordfered by the way...progressive &%^*^_ bifocals with the lower reaches being just for computer work :)

I do see a wayer drop hanging below the base of his beak?

Yes, there is something hanging out of his beak but I have no idea what it is. You can see the halo best around the black part of the beak and the legs. Do you have a 'magnifying glass' option on your monitor? Maybe that would help before you get your new glasses?

Axel I see the halo you were speaking. I have been experimenting with sharpening some. Is it over sharpening that causes the halo or the manner in which it was sharpened?

It could be both. Most of the time it happens if you not only sharpen the bird but also part of the BG. It works best to choose the bird only and then go Select > Modify > Contract, and choose 1 or 2 pixels before sharpening.

I hear you :o Getting there myself...

Not an easy image to make, for sure.

Today I have seen 3 different posts where the focus is very obvious on the wing closer to the camera. That tends to happen very frequently and not sure it would be operator error, or the AF loving the closer high contrast area (anyone ares to elaborate on that?)

The way I would go about it do the sharpening on a separate layer and erase the effect on the wing tip. if this is not enough, I know you have PhotoKit sharpening. Select the blru brush #1, go a bit over the wing tip and reduce the opacity to taste.

    Great capture!

Jim this is a lovely moment in time you captured, and I really like the obvious shadow in the sand. I too can see the bit of halo on the black section of beak and feet.
    Very nice!

Oh man. What a capture! I agree about the BG noise and oversharpening.

When sharpening a subject as opposed to the background, I lasso the subject just INSIDE its border, making sure I don't get any of the actual edge or background. This eliminates a halo effect. It also ensures no excess sharpening to the background along the edge of the subject, because my next step would have been to lasso around just to the OUTSIDE of the subject and to run noise reduction and a slight gaussian blur on the BG, making sure the edge was feathered.

And Jim, sorry to get caught up in criticizing the criticism. Your image is excellent, IMO, and a great job.

It's very nice flight photo with excellent DOF. Unfortunately I also see halo (probably oversharping) but stil it is excellent photo for me!

Wow Jim! Sweeeet image! Love the pose and light! I do however see some sharpening halo around his beak and a bit of noise in the BG.

Time for that 52" LCD! :D
