    Hi folks
reason for posting this is Steve´s comment to my last post regarding the eyes he missed some ´glossiness´in them.

So hear you go ,hope there is enough of it.Kept an extra eye on those eyes , just for you Steve. Taken this little Elephant seal resting on the edge of the stony beach , on South Georgia Island .
Would have liked to go lower , but the location did not allow that without getting in conflict with ice cold water or other seals.

    Canon EOS 1D MK III
    Ef 70-200 IS L at 150 mm
    HH

    F 8 ; Iso 800 ; 1/250 sec

Processed in Canon DPP and PS CC ; no NR used ; cropped for comp from all sides , 80 % of FF.

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous post

    Cheers Andreas

Cuteness personified, with good DOF where needed and the eyes look clear and glassy. To be real picky, a tad of CCR level could be used.

Thanks Marc - two things could have happened : become flattened by 2.5 tons of blubber or get bitten with some awful teeth , or ending up with wet pants and freeze my butt of for the rest of the day ........... and that all just for those lovely eyes. No .

Leveling ? The image is leveled on the eyes , for me good enough , but if you still want to be picky ... go for it ..... i stay with my level .

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas - I like the way this is a bit bigger in the frame than some of your other seal images. Nice dof and detail. I don't blame you for not getting into all the muck. My first impression was also that a slight amount of rotation might be in order. Even if the eyes are straight, the water line makes the body seem like it is on a slight slope. The mouth does look straight though.

Hi Andreas, cracking detail & clarity on this one, even more so from the MKIII, still a great body.

Like the almost monochromatic feel to the image conveying the location, lower would have been really cool, looks quite shallow here. Regarding rotation, you have to go with what looks right to the eyes IMHO. Don't forget to use the built in level in the 1DX or go for the the Uniq.

A suitable compromise on the levelling would be for just a slight amount of CCR, (it didn't have to be perfectly straight) as was my suggestion,
and the eyes are still in perfect alignment , much better now IMO, as you say Andreas "just my preference"

thanks guys for your feedback /RP , appreciate your thoughts and work.
Marc - by seeing this it looks slightly better , so that is what RP´s are good for .
Steve - actually i never used the 1Dx leveling and honestly shooting HH lying flat in the dirt does not seem to me very handy , it will work for landscape and still subjects when the cam is attached to a tripod .
For the moment i skipped the Uniq , i thought i will buy the new 16 - 35 for shooting wider and a lot of space around the subjects for cropping and leveling . The Uniq has to wait .

    Thanks again Andreas

Marc's RP addresses the rotation issue well.

LOL, yes HH and self levelling would't really work.

The 16-35 is a great lens for sure.

Very cute, Andreas! Interesting how monochromatic this actually looks - you have to scour the image to find a hint of browns and reds .
With the head angled diagonally away from us I would have never used the eyes as leveling reference. Good call by Marc and a good RP IMHO...

Thanks Morkel for your feedback , thats how it looks down there on a really grey day almost monochromatic, depending on the location of South Georgia.
The youngsters look almost mono in color , starting from almost black fur and then turning more ´colorful´when they become older .
And yes i should have used the eyes as reference .

    Thanks again Andreas

    Hello Andreas,

I am a bit late to comment and trying to catch up after a short period of absence Love the "glossy" eyes and especially the reflection of the surroundings in them, so glad you did not get in the way of some of the "big guys"...Nice close-up you got here, love the expression and that mouth opened just a little, great processing Andreas - lovely detail and the colours very natural. Impressive work, Marc's RP does make sense to me, it looks like the image needed a tad or rotation, now it is perfect!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
