    Default Lion Roaring

With the tips from Brendon, i re-worked this image from Kwando Lagoon. This is one of the two male lions that rule the Kwando Lagoon concession area. On this night, we found them lounging about not so far from one another and first one roared, then the other, then together. It was deafening. I'm glad that our tracker left his seat on the front bumper to join us inside the safari vehicle.

ISO-10,000 (this was overkilled by 2EV, should have shot at ISO 3200)

Reduce exposure by -2EV in LR5
Burned the face a little with the tool in LR5
Converted to B&W with Nik Silver using one of the presets
Added more local contrast, darkened the area behind the lion, applied warming photo filter, added canvas on the RHS (don't know why I shot vertical!)

I'm really happy to have rescued this image, thanks to Brendon's tip for 'ignoring the histogram"
    Appreciate your comments.

Happy to post the color version later if anyone is interested.

    Thank you

Hi Loi - I think you did a good job recovering this one. The conversion and comp look good and you tamed the spot well.

    TFS,
    Rachel

I prefer the colour version Loi, nice pose and isolation of the subject.

I like both versions; very impressive. Is that a twig in his mane?

    Hi Loi!
I do like both versions and I think you have done justice to this lovely male lion with your processing, I surely can learn from you a couple of things

The only "critique", or rather question I have, does not pertain to the processing (which is really great by the way ), but to the title " Lion Roaring". I know not enough when it comes to processing but I have spent a great deal of time in the company of these majestic animals, heard and watched them roar in close proximity on many occasions and usually their head kind of lunges forward and the muzzle slightly closes to produce that unmistakable sound we call "roar". This looks more like a yawn to me, and indeed on a rare occassion there is a yawn in-between roars or at the end of a roar - but just wanted to make sure?

Had another look at your image, my vote goes to the colour version - it has more punch, more life, definitely my "cup-of-tea", well done, congratulations!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Hi Gabriela

Thank you for your comments and your observation is astute. This may in fact be a yawn after the roaring. My sense of that night was a bit impacted by the roaring and that was what was on my mind when I processed this image.

Not much was done to the processing of the color other than reducing the exposure and recovered the white on the face. Adding canvas was easy in this case because it was just black :)

The color version has grown on me too. I think it's better than the B&W.

Hi Artie, thank you for your comments. Yes, it is just a twig on the lion's mane. I should just try to clone it out.

Hi Loi - Sorry was away from the computer all day. Thanks for posting the color. I think it has the slight edge for me.

Hey Loi. Good job on both versions, the colour takes the edge for me as per Rachel - in hindsight a hint more SS would have had the snout sharp
