Tough species to get good images of imo,... well done...Perch quality is excellent...I'm likin all the lichens :) Very nice side profile of the bird. I wonder about warming the image slightly, or maybe there is a little color cast on this one, though I'm not good at calling those out specifically...a green cast maybe... Compositionally maybe consider trimming a bit off the top and left hand side....
Neat perch for sure, and good details. Exposure is spot-on. Yes to a greenish/cyanish cast...adding some magentas or reds to the colour balance will negate that. Angle a tad steep, but these guys can be tough to get down lower (it's only ever happened once for me with this species).
Hi Bill,
I too see a green cast.
Love the perch and the lichens but am wondering if you accidentally ran some NR on it? The grasses look not quite right to me.
I would take some off the top as well if the IQ can handle it.
Gail
Thank you Shawn, Daniel and Gail. Your collective comments mirrored my initial concerns almost word for word. When I originally tried to alleviate the green cast, everything I tried made the wings look unnaturally purple. In this repost, I pushed the slider a bit toward magenta on an adjustment layer, but erased it over the wings. Maybe a little better?
As to the perch, Gail, I didn't run any NR on it. I think the problem is DOF, exacerbated by a large crop. Here, I've run some Topaz Detail on it (with a bit of their deblur function). I don't think it made the problem go away.
Because of the large crop, I've left the comp per the OP, although I agree there is too much negative high-key space at the top.
Couldn't do much about the POV. This was really just a grab shot when I saw him perched so nicely. I suppose I might have taken the time to try and coax him lower, but there were so many birds and so little time, I didn't even think of it. (If you have never been to the Skillern Tract of Anahuac NWR, it's definitely worth a visit. I had my heart set on a King Rail, so the Pewee took a back seat.)
