    Default Cheetah Sundowner

A special sighting at Craig Lockhardt waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park during my recent visit... We spotted the cheetah on the horizon of the ridge next to the dry Auob riverbed. When he started to move down we knew he was heading for the waterhole and made our way there... He was close - I had to move over to another camera with a shorter lens, as the 500mm was too long!

    1/1600s at F5.6 and ISO 800

Love the golden lighting and this low POV thirst quenching pose, would prefer more space on the LHS and less on the right Rudi if this isn't FF?

Lovely image, great light and the drinking behaviour is awesome. I agree with Marc reg more space to the right in the direction where the cheetah is looking.

Hello Rudi! This is such a great sighting! I think I might know this cheetah, few months ago that scar on the nose was already there, I shall look through my last KTP folders to make sure this is not a case of "mistaken identity"...
I gather this is FF and you did not want to crop too tight, love the pose here and the tongue and water droplets a bonus, wondering what time of the day you took this image, also wondering what Kalahari had to offer in winter (I have never been there this time of the year). This makes me start counting the sleeps, two months and a bit and I will be there again, searching the riverbeds and the red dunes, listening to the lions roar at night...

Kind regards and hoping for more images from your recent trip,
    Gabriela Plesea

Thanks for the feedback guys! Unfortunately I do not have more space to the left - Only cropped about 10% off the right and bottom... Would also have preferred more space to the left!

The trip was awesome Gabriela, although I had to deal with -8 degrees celsius some mornings (water pipes etc frozen and no water for coffee). Spent some 6 days alone at Rooiputs which was unfenced and had a run in with a spotted hyena one night (which was only funny some days later ). A friend joined me for the last couple of days at Mata Mata, during which we had this sighting just before sunset at 17H19 (was a bit late for the gate after this...)! Only 1 solitary lion in 11 days, so rather disappointed as far as the lion sightings are concerned - Met people of the Kgalagadi lion project, and they confirmed that the lions prefer the warmer dunes during the cold winter months and avoid the colder riverbeds... Rather a big contrast with our trip during January when we saw lions about every day!

Very nice light Rudi, lovely detail and nice detail in the shadows too, compositional issues covered already, otherwise a great image.

Hi Rudi, if the Cheetah hadn't turned you would have been in prime position. Like the angle, but if you have it a fraction more below would be good. Nice light & detail, but you can up the white in Levels which helps.

Can't add much more here Rudi - good balance of shadow and light and a lovely waterhole for cheetah sightings for me personally too.
I would crop this square for better balance?
