Default Youth Big Horn Ram Portrait

    Hi folks ,
just one image from the other side of the big ocean , from my location.

Taken this image of the Ram in Jasper NP , was the only Ram i saw and photographed in 12 days , was hoping for more but mother nature did not support me.
BKG was kind of difficult to deal with , in terms of getting a ´clean´one. The sun was coming from the left so i had strong shadows in the rocks.
So i dealt with it , after several attempts with D&B or other stuff like blurring.
So finally i took the clone stamp and tried to create a kind of ´marbled´look to the BKG .......... WDYT? does this work ?

Processed with DPP 4.0 and PS CC 2014 ; cropped for comp

    Canon EOS 1Dx
    EF 100 - 400 IS L at 235 mm

    Handheld

    F 8 ; Iso 800 ; 1/640 sec

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous thread.

    Cheers Andreas

Excellent detail in this portrait Andreas. The BG provides a nice color and texture contrast with the ram although I'd prefer the body wasn't visible under the chin. There are two slightly visible clone marks in front of the nose and mouth that could easily be fixed.

Hi Andreas - Great detail and tones. Steve has made good points above. I'd love to see what the original bg looked like. I presume you're watching the game right now so I won't expect an answer until tomorrow!

    TFS,
    Rachel

Thanks Steve and Rachel for your feedback.
Steve - oops i missed them , yes easy to fix .
Rachel you have been right , went to friends and watched this fantastic and exciting final with a great end for Germany .
Here is the version without the change in BKG.

    Thanks again , Andreas

Andreas I will come back tomorrow when I'm back and can look on 'proper' monitors, however just a thought, but slightly darkening the BKG at the rear of the subject/under the chin may be worth considering just to offer more of a continuos tonal colour?

    Hello Andreas!

I like the OP more with the softer BG, great portrait with lots of detail and beautiful colours - a very attractive image that looks effortless in terms of processing despite the work that went into it. Will be in touch soon, for now just browsing through the latest posts as I have missed the interaction with my BPN friends and now looking for inspiration to start processing some of my own images.

I really like that you have quite a lot of detail here in the shadow areas, very thoughtful processing - well done, I enjoyed viewing this!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Andreas, well back sooner than I had thought, the silver stallion certainly would have given Vettel a run for his money this morning, not quite the quickest, but close for 210 miles.

I really like this as a portrait, but prefer the original BKG as it less conflicting and softer, helps separate the subject nicely. Techs look good, but perhaps a fraction more to the left for the subject to look into. Now techs for you as you like them.

Adding an overall mid tone to the subject just adds some more depth I feel, but avoid the eye. Create a Channel Curves for the white, mask and brush in at around 50% on the ear & muzzle, likewise the whole BKG, just a subtle tweak. Channel selection to make some whites ping a little. Add a Channels Curve selection (Black) to add a fraction more tone in the horn, just my take.

Thanks Steve for your comment/ feedback , you have good ideas for improvements ,have checked it .

What would have the ´bobby ´said to Vettel if he had caught him at that speed ........., Mr Vettel open your wallet wide the speed limit is ........ i do not know, already forgot your limits. Seems that the wannabe Mr V. is happy with the silver stallion .

Regarding the BKG i am a bit puzzled , what looks better for your eyes ,1st or 2nd post ? first is soft and cloned .

    Cheers Andreas

Andreas as I said, I prefer the OP BKG. I like the 'softer' look & feel with little to compete with the subject. It's always frustrating when you know the BKG you would like, but techs, distance between the two and lens may not allow you to achieve it, then you have the dilemma in what to do, leave as shot, or change it to suit what you had in mind. BKG's have been driving me mad over the last two weeks and all out of my control sadly, but that's another story. Create what you want and if you feel comfortable then that is fine IMHO, it when you change it totally I may have concerns, but this is just my take.

I agree Andreas, things are subtle, but that is what can elevate things, you can't quite put you finger on it, but things look good.

The 'silver stallion', well lets take that off air, but you know you can't keep a good German thoroughbred & it's engineering down.
