    Default Eider Ducks on Helgoland

    Hi folks ,
posting this resting Eider from the Island of Helgoland, the island is situated in the North Sea.
This couple was resting on the pebbly beach and it took me a while that i could get close , i am not that confident how to approach birds as i am with other wildlife , and i do not have that much patience for the Avian stuff.

    F 5,6 ; Iso 1000 ; 1/1000 sec ; should have stopped down for more DOF /IQ , easy with higher ISO .
Heavy overcast sky helped with the exposure .

Thanks for watching and commenting to my previous thread

    Cheers Andreas

You did well getting close to this bird. Low and slow is the best way! Love the bird's pose and you have nice exposure and details. The bird in the BG works, but if you had taken one step to your right, you could have had better separation of the two which I think would have improved the image. Well done.

Hi Andreas, good to find you here in the Avian forum. The details on the duck is great, although I find the black on the head is a bit too dark and lacks details - could be different in monitor, so can't be sure. For me the OOF bird is a bit distracting as it is so OOF. Don't think you could get much more DOF though. Loi

Beautiful image. Nice pose, details and the pebbly beach in FG.
    Beautiful composition too.

Nicely done, the Eider in the front looks great. The OOF one in the background takes some of the attention away.

You did a good job of getting close and a good job with the exposure. Marina nailed the juxtapositional problem. Even a few inches or a foot to the right would have eliminated the slight merge.

    Andreas:

Good comments from all above. I do agree with Loi, that because the back bird is so OOF, that it doesn't add as much to the image as if it was just a bit more in focus. Your self critique is spot on , push up the ISO, more DOF, and a much stronger image.

    Cheers

Thanks folks for all your kind comments , appreciate them a lot.
Some of you are right about the movement to the right i should have made to get a better separation between the two ducks.
But i disagree about the female in the back being distracting, at least for me , so she will stay there .

    Thanks again Andreas

    Hi Andreas,
I like the composition with the female in the background - tells the story.
The slight merge with the male isn't ideal, but a very minor point in my opinion.
You did well getting so close.
    Best wishes, Gerald

I actually like the BG female and agree she should stay, but I also agree with having moved to your right a tad more would have improved her placement. Good techs. Although minor, I'd remove the white speck on said female as it does not add anything to the image.

I agree with comments above regarding position with the caveat that one would hope the bird's head would turn sufficiently.
