Stunning. Just to see one of these guys in breeding plumage would be a real treat. To get an image like this must be a dream come true. Great take-off pose, perfect head turn, fabulous light. Since you already did some cleanup, I might imagine going a step further and taking out the light pinkish blobs that are catching the sun to the right of his head. They don't really hurt the image, but perhaps draw the eye just a tad away from the gorgeous bird.

Brilliant image, Gail. Sharp detail of this most colorful Eider. Love the takeoff pose, wings up, head turn, water splash, and clearly visible droplets behind wings and lower front. Beautiful warm BG. I envy you with this capture.

I love the colors here Gail. An amazing bird, and nice wing position. I like the feet showing the runway takeoff. Very nice looking light.

    Gail:

Great full up pose, angle in frame, quality of light, and of course a striking bird.

Because of the contrast between the weed and the water, I would consider removing the curved reed just to the right and below the tip of the bill. The OOF material doesn't bother me.

    Cheers

This one is a stunner Gail. The light is spectacular, so is the bird facing us, the wing position and that raised foot! I love it!

These guys are so colorful and unique. I would love to see and capture one some day and to catch him in a great take off pose like this would be as good as I could hope for. Fantastic shot Gail.

Hi Gail, excellent low angle, and well timed to get the take off with the raised wings. Stunning detail and colours on the head, and I like the layered lines in the BG.

Absolutely stunning image of this species taking off Gail....This one image would be worth the price of admission to me :) Beautiful colors, tones, and setting. Shooting angle is so good that it leads to this question... Is this the type of image that one just lucks into with good numbers of birds, or was there a methodology here in regards to someone moving the birds towards you, while participants in the workshop were able to anticipate a flight opportunity?

    Hi Shawn,
We saw 3 male king eiders and 2 females this particular evening. We were lined up at the edge of the pond in our waders when this male took off.We were all happily clicking away full body full frame portraits when this happened. It is pure luck that he was angled towards us. No one pushed him.
Matthew has excellent field craft techniques. We walked about 2 miles on the tundra in our waders, at times slogging through knee high ice water. We (matthew) spotted these guys in an ice pond and we ever so slowly walked quietly in single file toward the pond. Once we got to the edge of the pond, we fanned out while staying low and set up our gear. The eiders did not fly but moved to the far edge of this small pond. After a few minutes of us being still and quiet ,they setlled back into their routine of preening etc. Matthew then used a call once to bring them in closer. After that, we just enjoyed the moment and took lots of pics in beautiful light.
I was able to get several sharp frames of this take-off and have saved my favorite for later!
    Hope this info helps,
    gail

Gail that's fantastic feedback, thanks for taking the time, and thanks for sharing the images from the trip. I don't know about others, but I enjoy living the dream of getting up there, vicariously through your images :)

You are too kind Gail. Thank you. And this is really a fantastic shot. if I remember you got something like 12 sharp shots in a row of this guy. I really like this wing position and background.
