    Default Wide marmot-scape

As the marmots became more approachable, someone had brought a bag of carrots ;) , I decided to try and go for another angle. No foreground mush, bit more contrast, BG is as alpine as I could get without the telegraph pole and car park.

5DIII, ISO200, 17mm (17-40), handheld, f13 (I wanted to see the BG in this). Not baited but he maybe thought I had some food... :|

I like it. The wide angle works very well. I like how you chose a smaller aperture. It really shows the animal in its alpine environment. You must of been within a meter of it. Well done

Hi Neil, it's always great to have the opportunity t shoot wildlife with a wide angle lens. It sure gives a different perspective. Not sure what options you had with respect to the POV, but it looks like you shooting up. The hill behind the marmot is close to its head, not ideal in my opinion. Have you tried to shoot at eye level? Loi

Hi Neil, love it, possibly the best to day, well for me.

Typical environment and I like the fact you have a hint of snow conveying the time of year nicely, likewise the light. Good choice in the perspective, the lens gives that nice 'distorted' appearance which is cool in my book. I'm sure you planned it, but the fact the body angle also echoes the incline of the mountains in the BKG. I just wonder if moving a little to the right may have helped and eliminate the snow area in front of the chin albeit small, but no deal breaker, likewise having a sliver more below.

Meant to add the SS for you 1/320 EV 0.

    TFS

What an eye-catcher, Neil! So much of the environment included here, love the perspective, pose of the subject, colours look natural. Image well processed, sharpness is there, good IQ, and not to forget the little catchlight in the eye of the Marmot

    Kind regards,

Hi Neil , great work with the Marmot .Like the overall comp . But would like to see , as with the previous post, a bit more tonal depth and color. Still feel for a realistic mid day shot we should see more deeper shadows. But maybe just personal preference by me.

Are the rocks that greenish ? To me they look like they are having a slight green/cyan cast.Again could be just me .

Thanks guys. Again moving one way or the other I would have either a concrete bunker or telegraph pole in shot, a bit higher I had a togger in shot :o Tourists eh? Top it off with the car park down the hill, the restaurant below us and the restaurant above us.... and the Swarovski observatory in the distance....

Here you can see a higher POV from one angle, post I could clone (with patience) but the car park was best avoided ;)

Hi Neil - I too think this is my favorite. I don't mind the shooting angle. Ideally if you could have avoided the edge of the mountain intersecting the head it might have taken the image up another notch but a small issue imho. Thanks for showing the surroundings a bit to give the context and obstacles to the shot.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Have looked through all the shots and there is definately something growing on the rocks, sometimes yellow, sometimes white... and the old dead growth seems to be greenish. Lichen or somesuch.

    Thanks all!

Agree with Steve, best of the lot (at least what we've seen here ). Lovely setting, composition and perspective.

What do you think of this repost?
I added a luminosity mask @ 30% for the sky and other highlights, added midtone contrast as well...
