    Default Red Phalarope-female

    Attached Images Attached Images

Just back from a terrific week with Matthew Studebaker in Barrow, Alaska. We saw 36 species and photographed 25 of them well.
We were blessed with 3 beautiful sunny days and 24 hour sunlight. Very fun to take images at midnight in sweet light.
Took this in a puddle on the side of the road. The female is the prettier of the the sexes in phalaropes.

PP- Small crop ( 80% full frame), rescued the whites in the wing, levels, NR to BG and DE to bird. Nothing cloned ( water really was that clean!!)
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail

The wing really makes this for me, good job pulling backk the whites. Opportunities abound, great job of taking advantage of a puddle!

Bird ,water, IQ excellent. Great shot Gail.
It does show my problems with reflections though when they are not broken by ripples . Trouble is you have to show the whole thing . Just my personal view. No big deal.

This looks awesome Gail. Perfect wing stretch! Love the colours. Techs and processing look good too.

Beautiful. Great wing stretch, lovely colors on the Phalarope, good techs. You must have had a fantastic trip. Wish we had a few puddles like that around here.

Very sweet with those fully extended wings. One shot that I'll cry over forever is when I clipped the wings when one did this in Nome. Good job shooting loose enough to get it all in the frame.

    Gail:

Perfect stretch, subtle head turn, clean water, all great.

I would consider ever so slightly toning down the luminosity of the reflection where it exits the bottom of the frame to reduce its tendency to draw the eye out of the frame.

    Look forward to more.

    Cheers

Hi Gail, well timed to capture the extended wing, and this is tack sharp. Excellent whites on the underwing of the near wing, and I do like the colour of this bird.

The puddles look deep in Alaska. Without having mentioning it, one could mistake this for a pond/lake.

Thanks all for the critiques. I will tone down the white reflection as Randy suggested. excellent idea.
Stuart- the phalaropes are small birds -about 3/4 size of a mourning dove. So they fit perfectly into a puddle!

It's all here, Gail. IQ is outstanding. Most has already been said, but I might add I like the tiny water droplets on the side.

Welcome back Gail. I love these birds, especially their twitchy movements and their feeding behaviors. Never seen the red ones.
The Image looks great and I like the pose and the detail in the feathers.
This looks exposed exactly how I would liked to expose this. Some blinking on the under wing, which can be brought back if not totally cooked, and it lead to great detail in the rusts and blacks. Great work.

I'm way behind in Avian, but just wanted to say how much I like this one -- I agree about the reflection -- I'd make it almost disappear before the bottom of the frame. Of course the bird is wonderful, as said above, but I also really like the DOF effect on the water, with the gentle ripples on the plane of the bird and softening front and back. It gives a very nice grounding to the bird.

What nice calm water, beautiful light showing off the color of the bird well, and of course, who could ask for a better pose?!
