    Default Smoke & Flares

Greetings. A little 4th of July preview...

The first time I shot fireworks (a year or two earlier than this shot) I fell in love with the smoke. It's something you don't see as much when viewing fireworks because the bright flares overwhelm the impression of the smoke but in a photograph...

Nancy, There are all kinds of ways to shoot fireworks... web wisdom seems to favor the tripod, low ISO, long shutter speed, short focal length to include the ground and get the creamy blur firework style. So of course I tried hand-held, high ISO, medium to short shutter speeds, long focal length (fond of 200mm not shown here) & have stuck with it over the years. Pre-focusing is good. Manual settings also good but A or S are interesting, too. Long focal length pretty hard with a tripod (bif like, well, small fast birds anyway, you can track the propellant flare before the explosion ;-). Experimentation is key. Have fun.

    Cheers,

    -Michael-

Nice job. I like the composition. I've never tried photographing fireworks.

Michael, thanks for the details for your technique. I'm ready to try it!

I do like the additional details of the smoke! Great composition, and those red flares look like tiny light bulbs!

Very nice, I do like the smoke which gives a different background for the bright flares. Nicely composed as well.
