    Another from the marmot series.

5D3, ISO200, 200-400@400 f5.6, handheld, full frame, small clone, stain on the rocks. This one not baited (not by me anyway :o ) he was not going to move for anything.

Hi Neil - please also include your ss in the Exif data posted. In this case it was 1/1000. Sharpness looks good and I like the sort of twisted pose of the marmot. If it were mine I would give the marmot a slight boost in curves to make it pop a bit more. The one thing that really bothers me is the oof clump in llc. Could you have moved to the right in the field to avoid it? Keep them coming.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Thanks Rachel, sorry about the SS. I am trying to avoid my old habit of too much contrast and with these sunshine at midday images those bright parts are a bugger to keep in control. Just me trying to be subtle :) The oof clump... I could have taken it a bit higher but to the left was a pylon and to the right a car park in the distance, the green mush was by far the better of all evils.

Hi Neil , cool pose of the Rat . You handled the midday light quite well without blowing or plugging something. The comp works nice and i do have no problem with the FG mush ,even more after the additional info.
I would expect for midday shots more shadows and HL , and a hint more color.

So i took the liberty to show a direction what i am thinking of , all done in LAB , slight boost of colors, reduced the greens by adding a color curve , and added a SOFT LIGHT layer selectively to the subject at 50 % opacity and masked with a mid tone mask.

Must not be the final state , just my 2 cents .

    TFS Andreas

Great shot. Like the background. Light is good. Wonderful composition. Looking forward to photographing them again in a few weeks :-)

Just don't go midday Markus, light is horrible :o

Thanks Andreas, I might opt for something between the two.

Hi Neil, thanks for clarifying why you took the position you did, as the OOF clump is very dominating IMHO, which is a real shame. If the subject wasn't going to move for anything, could you have slightly flattened it just to reduce the 'effect' the grass I mean? The BKG is a killer, likewise the colours and much prefer the OP, albeit viewing on the laptop. Techs look spot on, also the PP. Is this the marmot centrefold?

Glad you are not over here now, we have a sea of yellow jerseys touring, our main road is close for them over the weekend.

http://neilburton.smugmug.com/Nature...non-feathered/ - you can see here one of the telegraph posts, the other was cloned but I could not be bothered with the snow :)

Thanks Steve. I imagine Burnsall and area are somewhat packed, how horrific to have all those French people picnicking everywhere! :o ;) Hope they don't eat the little owls....

Nice angle and colours, Neil. Good critique received above - I actually like these mushy foregrounds, each to his own eh.
Regarding contrast - somewhere between your OP and Andreas' RP for me.

    Hello Neil!

This must be the cutest Marmot I have seen so far, lovely image thoughtfully processed, beautiful soft colours in the BG, nice and sharp and I like the comp. I agree the OP needs a bit more pop and I like what Andreas did, bringing in more colour and depth to the subject and revealing the shiny quality of the Marmot's fur.

Great work Neil, I am really enjoying your posts - keep them coming please!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
