Very nice and different!
Nancy -- a tripod is needed for the best results, which rely on a long exposure, and a remote release is highly recommended but not mandatory. Pre-focus and set a zoom that will work for most images -- you'll waste a few shots dialing it in but the rest will be worth it. Here's a simple tutorial:

Greetings. A nice festive look. Fireworks a little lower (reflections over the horizon) and to the left (match edges) would work for me. Thanks for posting.
