Hi folks another seal playing in the surf image , taken on my recent trip to Helgoland .
For those who do not know ,this are Grey Seals.

Subadult males having fun in the surf , making exercise for the next mating season .

    Canon EOS 1Dx
    EF 200- 400 IS L at 400 mm
    Tripod

    F 8 ; Iso 4000 ; 1/1000 sec ; man exposure + 2 EV

Processed in brand new Canon DPP 4.0 and PS CC , no NR applied , just chrominance NR ; cropped to pano from all sides , just saw the slight halo , masking issue !

Thanks for watching and comments to previous image , C&C welcome.

    Cheers Andreas

Hi Andreas - good action, well captured and processed. I like the position in the frame and the splashing water adds to the drama. Aside from the halo, it looks good at ISO 4000.

    Stunning capture, Andreas!

On Laptop, can not comment on colour, but would have loved to see more eye!

I was just told by a good friend, NEVER go over 1600 ISO on the D3S! Seems unlike google, high ISO is not your friend...?

Will post some images taken with 5 digit ISO, we can compare noise and detail.

    Cheers
    Andre

Great moment here Andreas! Initially I felt it needed rotation but the base of the seals is fine and that's actually realistic.

Andre - then I need to sell my D3s as I usually use it higher than 1600 haha

Thanks Neil,Rachel, Andre and Morkel for watching and feedback.
Andre with good capture and editing ISO up to 6400 no problem at all , depending on the image content , one most just know how to do this .

Hi Andreas, like the interaction, waves and the sea rolling in. Nice soft colours to the sea with the dominance of the dark subjects. Not sure if you have lifted' the seals tonally, or it might be the ISO, but do you think the subjects would benefit from having a more richer, deeper dark colour, but obviously not to the sacrifice of loosing mid tone detail? Being on a slightly sloping beach, your eye wants to rote the image, but the horizon is level.

Thanks Steve, no lifting of the seals in general, because 95 % of the images taken on Helgoland are ETTR to overexpose . Sometimes with no detail visible in the HL of the raw file when opened in Raw converter, all is looking red .
i have chosen this tonality , because i liked it............. but please feel free and share your vision , would be great , thank you in advance .

    Cheers Andreas

Not sure if I was correct Andreas however:

Added a Curves adjustment for the mid tones, more mid tone overall to bring back a bit more depth, spray masked at 50%, then a small Selective colour on the seals themselves, again masked the mouths????

Hi Steve thanks for taking your time and RP , understand what you wanted .......... but i do not think it fits my remembering of the shooting conditions.
Even my OP is a tad dark compared to what i remember the shooting .It was overcast , but light overcast no heavy clouds . So the overall scene was lighter than in both versions .
Does it work take your RP and just make it lighter and still keep the tonal values ?
Good question, Maestro , you have the knowledge and the tools !!!!!!!

    Cheers Andreas

Good question Andreas, but if you lighten (or open it up) surely you are then going back to the original point in question? Probably as you say, the OP is the better option, but like you, occasionally I like to ask the question and if we come back to the same place or start, then at least we have explored things and have the satisfaction of doing so. In asking the question to an image, all I am doing is asking if the 'poster' has thought about the point or not, and if not, perhaps in doing so, i.e. looking at an adjustment, crop, POV it may take the image up a gear, as we all do.

    Anyway all good fun Andreas.

I like the action and the repost. Best thing about the image is that you got high enough so that the horizon line was above the two seals....

I can hear the waves breaking...the splash...beautiful Andreas, well done! Perfect framing and presentation is just right, very realistic in terms of lighting and colour, what I like most is that there is so much detail in the fur of the seals - you've nailed it again Andreas, congratulations!

    Kind regards,

Indeed Andreas, and that is because I have a soft spot for those BPN members who work so hard to produce some amazing shots, as well as to help others make the best of their images

Love to see everyone's efforts to produce something original, BPN Wildlife is such a special place and I am so proud to be part of it, learnt so much from everyone and I love to participate. I think the whole purpose of writing a critique here is to encourage and help one another, I do feel I have a special relationship with BPN members and I would like to nurture it. I spend more time processing and viewing images on BPN than socialising with friends, so I wear my "best clothes" when interacting with my fellow photographers! Hope this makes sense Andreas...

Some outstanding work from you lately, no need to "sugarcoat" my comments, well done my friend!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
