My latest pool is starting to work - especially with the dry weather. This one is designed so I don't have to cart water around in 5 gallon drums.
Don't get many linnets in our area these days. Never seen one with such a pale grey head. This one is from yesterday when I had, this, Blackbird, Wren, Male and female Blackcap, Whitethroat, Robin, Goldfinch, greenfinch- so its a start. I must get some weed in the water. Don't like it plain like this- can't tell what it is ??

Nice, clear shot John! I actually like the pool's natural look - it looks like a natural stream. Do I read correctly between the lines that it's something you've made?

    Hi Tobie
    Thanks
Yes Ihad a pool in this old quarry field which had to be filled in when they returned the field reinstated to the owner. The farmer then dug me a new on out in the same fiels ( not far from the Little Owls.)
The secret is to make the catchment area around the pond far bigger thann you need. The liner is greenhouse tunnel UV treated poythene and polyethelene pond linerThat then collects the water and keeps the pond fuller longer. The other tip is to have the deep water with an abrupt edge where you DONT want the birds to go ! They like the shallow water to bathe in. I'll post a pic of the pool. Cheers

Heres a shot- before and after ! The hedge is good because all the stuff comes in from there.

Magnificent image. Beautiful bird in beautiful pond. Beautiful color pallet. Nice composition.
Wish you could remove part of stick across the claws.
Great efforts you have taken. Hats off to you !!!

Hi John, thanks for sharing your construction of the pool. Your OP with the close up of the linnet shows us that he is standing next to a natural pond/river - well done. Good detail on the little guy, and with a good HA. This species looks like our common house sparrow.

It looks like hard work, but absolutely worth it John! Such a nutural look that one would never guess it's hand made! You've started a thought process in the back of my mind - dangerous!

Handsome little chap isn't he, I like the shot very much. Good tips on the pool too! My garden pond has to much low lying edges to it as a result the water level drops rapidy by calillary attraction. I think I will have to take up the edges and put more soil under to elevate this will also provide a convenient place for bean bag so I can get the damsels ovipositing.
