Loi was in town last week and we spent an enjoyable afternoon trying to photograph songbirds. Struck out completely on those, they just would not cooperate at all, even the reliable ones!! Anyhow, we ended the day at a Purple Martin "condo" nest box that had a bit of activity around it. The wind was not strong so it made it a huge challenge to photograph these fast bullets as they came in to land in their respective "apartments". Many, many misses and clipped / cut and oof subjects but I got lucky here as this one paused a bit to squabble with a neighbour for a second or two before landing.

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2500s., f/4, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, cropped for comp (about 75% FF), clone out a bit of the condo still showing at right, darkened the pupil.

    Daniel:

Well captured. I have probably had a lower success rate capturing Martins in flight than any other bird I have tried!

The head angle is great for this pose, well exposed.

Encourages me to get out and try them again!

    Cheers

Hi Daniel, it was too bad about the song birds that day, but you did quite well here. These guys are quite fast and I didn't have anything even close to this. The bird house was a bit higher than we were, so not ideal, but you had decent underwing details here. Did you see the KF later in the week? Please shoot me a PM and I will ring you next time I'm in town, Thanks

Great shot, so hard to get these guys in focus. Also your exposure looks great as often times in harsher light I get a heavily underexposed stomach area.

Great flight position wing wise. Different from the norm. Like it

Hi Daniel - Looks like this one made the wait worth it. Nice flight pose, head angle and sheen to the feathers.

    Hi Daniel,

Agree re the wing position and the head turn is a nice touch. Good capture.

Loi, yes, my buddy did show me the KF nest he found (actually, two of them within a hundred yards or so).
