Hi Kaushik - I like the overall comp here with the draped trunk and eye. It accentuates the wrinkles of the trunk and you've brought out good textures from the skin and mud. This is an instance where a more square comp works well. The one concern I have is that it seems to lack critical sharpness due to the narrow dof. Not sure what your shooting conditions were but you certainly had plenty of ss to stop down more and room to up the ISO if necessary too. On something like this I would have gone to at least f7.1 and more likely f9 or 11.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Kaushik , i like this all around , good comp , very good texture and detail even if you have plugged some of the detail by going that contrasty and dark. I would just open up the area around the eye .
I do not see any issue of DOF or critical sharpness .

    TFS Andreas

Hi Kaushik and Andreas - to me both on the screen and when I pull it into PS, it just doesn't look sharp, particularly in the eye area. The middle of the trunk area looks sharper. Where was the AF point? I suspect it was actually on the trunk.

Thank you Rachel and Andreas for taking time off to review the image.
This image was made at 165mm focal lenth @ f/2.8 (SS = 1/2000)
First off, I agree that I could certainly have stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8 considering the available light. It just didn't occur to me at that time :)

@Rachel: I don't really remember where the focus point lies. But looking at the image, I think its probably on trunk. I usually (try to) make sure to keep eyes in focus - perhaps I've erred on this occasion.

Very nice on the texture of the wrinkled skin and that drape of the tip of the trunk! You might consider bringing up just a bit of the details (i.e. lighten) of the upper left side of the image to add the context of the head of the ellie, in addition to the eye. It is just a bit abstract as those wonderful array of wrinkles draw most of the attention. I really like a close-up approach for elephants to show details that just cannot be seen in an image of the whole animal.

Quite dramatic. I like the image design with the eye upper right and the end of the trunk lower left.

Works for me. But I too would have stopped down on this occasion. Interesting that you have managed to get away with it, given that you must have been close!
