The Pileated Woodpecker nest that I thought would be earlier this spring was not after all...but as a consolation prize a Downy Woodpecker's nest was found :-) Not too high up, and oh-so easily accessible, plus both parents are actively feeding with no care in the world about me being there. Here's one of the bigger meals the male brought in...

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/200s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, 85% FF, darkened the the top part of the BG as well as some of the brighter parts of the tree.

Perfectly executed as expected. What a mouthful of bugs. What a dirty bird.

What a killer portrait, Daniel!!! Love the tree and the mouthful of food. The WP chicks really tear the adults apart during the nesting season!
