    Default elephant tenderness

Photographed on the Chobe River from the specialized photoboat. Lovely to capture this moment of tenderness. I thought I was going to miss it since I had to wait for an ellie in front to move.

    Canon 1DX, Canon 500mm, 1/800, f5.6, exp. comp. +2/3, ISO 1250.

    Comments and critiques most appreciated.

Hi Nancy, you captured good action in good light. Love the sharpness and details. I think the image is a bit too tight all around though. Do you have more room? Loi

    Hi Nancy

Wonderful light & DOF!! beautiful... I dont mind the crop but would have included all the ear. Love the dragonfly above the RH elephant.

Hi Nancy - what a playful image and you captured the interaction well. You've brought out excellent texture and detail. I'm curious as to the time of day as the elephants seem a bit warm with strong reds and yellows. I agree that if you have the full ear on the right, it would be better not to clip it. Depending on how much of a crop this is and if you have the full ear, you may be able to come up with a vertical crop as an alternative. You might back off on the sharpening just slightly as you are getting a sharpening halo, most noticeable around the ele on the right. Keep them coming.

    Rachel

A very endearing image Nancy, illustrates how these 'Big old Units' can show tenderness & caring with one another.

I too feel the image is a wee bit tight, can't remember the 'arsenal' of lens you had with you, but perhaps the 70-200 with a 1.4 or the 300 may have been the better choice, thus allowing for some minimal cropping for final composition. Certainly having more on the RHS and below would have been better. I like the way the water has coloured darkened the trunk & legs adds to the scene, but the dragonfly is priceless. Techs look good, but I may have suggested going to ISO1600, just personal choice. Initially I thought the blacks were a fraction heavy, creating a hint more contrast, but on reflection they look good, especially in the very dark, shadow areas. I'm not sure about backing off on the sharpening, I think it might be a sharpening mask issue, but not sure how you sharpen, so I could well be wrong.

Certainly Chobe is the place for this type of imagery and especially with the kit there and if you were with Brendon, then you were in safe hands, a great guy.

Hi Nancy agree with the others about this very nice and peaceful scene between these big guys. Like the overall colors and contrast , but i think the blacks are a tad to heavy for my liking in certain areas , but no deal breaker .A bit tight all around for me too.
I am fine with the sharpening.

    Good job , TFS Andreas

Thank you all for your very helpful comments. I have room to add both on the right and the bottom. I must have had my eyes closed when I cropped this ! I sharpen selectively with a mask. I'll work on the blending.

Brendon was with us for 1 day, and the remainder of the time we were in the wonderful hands of Wim. We loved the fresh morning coffee he always provided!

Here is much more space around the ellies, with less saturation as well. I do not have any more of the right side ellie.

    Hi Nancy,

I do like this crop better although I also like 'the complete ear plus clearance' crop if you wanted to keep the focus in on the contact.. Wont comment on the colour from this machine

Hi Nancy that is much better, now you could come in a bit on the RHS, but all personal preference, but having more space around has certainly helped.

Good to know you had the main man Wim, great guy. Those two will certainly put you in the right place and with good advice too.

Fine image capturing the playful moments. I would perhaps go for a crop in-between the first post and the re-post.
i.e. include the ear and a wee bit more but not as much as in re-post.

Thank you all for looking at the repost. Think I'll go for a crop between the two.
