would I be oversimplifying it to say, very similar, size weight advantage 5D mark iii, advantage 1D mark iv for its fast frames per second..? ISO advantage 5d Mark iii..?

I don't quite understand what your questions is? Are you trying to compare 1D4 with 5d3?

Yes, I was hoping to get some user feedback from people who are familiar with both, I can compare the specs but would like user feedback. Sorry for any confusion.

    Hi Fred,

That's a variety of subjects... For flight you need a fast camera to allow you to capture peak of action with the best pose, the 5D3 falls a bit short in shutter lag, fps (6 vs 10) and buffer capacity. For perched birds speed becomes less important. Of course for landscape FF is the best as it allows you to use wide lenses at their intended FL. A 1D camera is heavier, but it is more rugged, better sealed and has much better battery performance. It will last longer and less likely to fail if you shoot in snow/rain or very cold temperatures. With the 5D3, battery doesn't last for a day of shoot so you need to add a grip and extra battery, by that time it becomes larger and about the same weight as the 1D camera...

    Hope this helps

The 5D3 battery lasts well for me. Even with a 600 with IS engaged, I can shoot a 32G card (around 800 to 900 images) and still have some battery charge left. I find it much easier and lighter weight to put a spare battery in my pocket than to carry the weight and bulk of the battery grip, although it does have some ergonomic advantages for shooting vertical. And it makes you look more like a pro.

5D3 battery barely makes it to a 1000 shots (and it drops lower in cold temperatures) when action is hot you can easily shoot that many in one hour. A 1D can easily do 3000 shots in one charge. putting the battery in your pocket is not a good strategy for action, it will be difficult to fish it out and replace it if you are wearing thick gloves. If you are unlucky and it runs out in the middle of action, you will miss many frames by the time you replace the battery.

I still have both cameras. I have used the 1DM4 for four years and have been using the 5DM3 for about six month.
I like them both but now when I switch over to 1DM4 I find it heavy and hard on my right hand after a few hours of HH shooting.
IQ is slightly better on 5DM3 and takes higher ISO with less noise.
I'll keep the 1DM4 until they come out with a 5DM4 having 28 megapixels, better weather seal and higher frame rate.
Well it is rather a wish list.
