    Default Cartoon Shorty in Flight

    Hi Friends,
I think that this is my first post to the "Out of The Box" forum. I am usually an avian photographer. However, I came accross an offer online for a filter that I couldn't resist from our friends at Topaz Labs called "Topaz Clean". It takes a photo and makes it look like a painting or a drawing. I know what you are thinking, "There are lots of filters like that out there". This one does a very good job especially on high contrast images. The owl shot that I am posting was very noisy and a large crop. I had considered throwing it away. Once I applied this filter it made a world of difference in my decision. See for yourself and give me a bit of feedback. Lots of folks seem to like it on other forums. I just used the "cartoon" preset for this one but there are limitless possibilities.

The BG is very complimentary to the bird. I have never used "clean", but it certainly has done a marvelous job, and the banking pose is wonderful and nicely framed. Is this a screech owl?

Welcome to OOTB! The recently updated Topaz Clean has lots of interesting effects and I, too, have been experimenting with it. This version of the short-eared owl looks great & is a great save of the original image, from your description. Wonderful wing spread and view of the eye. The combination of the lighting and the topaz effect adds great drama to those widespread wings & face. Very nice plain, mottled bkgd in the browns & greens. Let's see more!

Hi Steve, and welcome to OOTB! The filter has done a wonderful job on your super capture of the owl. If you'll pardon the word play, this is a really clean image from beginning to final product. The Topaz filters are some of my favorites that I end up using almost every day. I highly recommend getting the entire suite, they are that good. I hope to see more of your work here, nice job!

Hi Jackie, Thanks for your comments. This is actually a short-eared owl. we are able to photograph them each winter at the local estuary here on Vancouver Island. The BG is the natural growth behind the bird in the estuary. Not sure of what kind of a substitute I could use but the original seems to play well with this image.

Hi, Steve, welcome to OOTB! I love everything about the image - the Topaz effect, the background, the owl's position and the lighting. Don't be a stranger - we'd like to see more

Welcome to OOTB. I think your owl turned out really well! Nice details yet simple lines. I like the light and dark areas, which give some depth. Beautiful colors. Beautiful background. The eye is perfect. I like everything about this image. Glad you found a way to save the original. Have fun with your new filter.
