    Default Black Rhino at night

    Attached Images Attached Images

Black Rhino at night drinking at a waterhole. This rhino came between when I took some images of a total different subject, the sky/stars.
Since this rhino stood very still I moved over to the rhino.
Camera on a tripod, waterhole was below me. NO way to get lower. I was already at the lowest point I could go.

Lightroom the normal adjustments, converted in LR with Silver Efex, no preset used, I never use a preset from SE.
Pulled into PS CC, adjustments done to contrast, lighten/darkened in various areas of the rhino, sharpened in PS CC. No noise reduction, cropped for comp.

    1 DX
    ISO 2000
f/4.0 1/4 sec. tripod was steady, me not quite, had a Savannah Dry already
    lens set to 200mm

Hi Anette, why did you no go for more ISO the IQ would have been far better?

I appreciate you could not get lower and I like the reflection, plus the subject bing off set, it works, but I just feel with using the f/2.8 the overall image could have been better. We were using at least 6400 and at times 20,000 just to see the results at times, but HH, however I think you would have impressed yourself if the ISO was higher and on a stable platform, but just my take.

    Hi Steve,

thanks a lot for your comment & time.
No idea why I did not go higher in ISO! My brain was set to something different and I also expected this rhino to move any second. This one was very skittish. Actually I thought never to get this image at all, just a fast experiment
The color image is actually orange due the flood light they use at the waterhole. Not quite what I prefer. Must check all files, I did later on, on the trip quite a few night images. They are now all moving from my storage to the new hd, takes a while… yawn

    Have a great day

    Ciao
    Anette

Hi Anette - I think you did well with the night conditions but certainly could have gotten more out of the image with higher ISO and ss. I like the strong reflection and overall comp.

    Hi Rachel,

    thanks so much
Right you are, guess the Savannah Dry just "fogged" my mind.

Have a great day and weekend

What a shame Annette you didn't go for a higher ISO considering you had this on tripod , and you only had 1 Savannah ..........you'll just have to return again!
I do like the reflection layering on the rhino, very nice!

Hi Anette besides the technical shooting issues and the beer blocking your brain . I quite like the idea going B/W for this night shot .
I like the overall image design and conversion but i would go for pano and loose the bushes , just my idea.

It works nicely in B&W, Anette, I concur with the comments on ISO & SS. The repost does look markedly crisper and sharper, though

I like this and I don't think the IQ has suffered hugely from the low SS.
