I was hoping to get a nice brownish-green background, but he stayed up high against the rainclouds.

Nice pose, love the crest up.
I like it too, Kester. The blue sky is complementary, and has a nice gentle gradient to it. May I ask where you were when you created this image? It is a new species for me. Well done.
This is in Guyana, Grace. It's common in South America, related to the pileated you guys have in the North.
Kester, The background is quite pleasing and so is the WP. The use of fill flash has certainly brought out the colours. Great result. Pamela
I agree with others, the background really makes the shot. Great complimentary colors. Super!
I thought I was losing my mind with this image! I looked at it last night and the woodpecker was facing the other way. You must have changed the image after posting it as I see that John noticed the same thing.
I really like this image. Your first image showed the unusual striped belly and I really enjoyed seeing that. Perhaps you could repost it?
Great woodpecker on a nice tree.Exposure is spot on with good details in the blacks.
IQ is good. In a perfect world your angle would not be so steep.
