    Default Lionness head rub

    Hi guys,

Had a great weekend at Lion Camp after our wedding. Brilliant morning with the Hollywood pride with lots of interaction. This is one in a series I took of two lionnesses rubbing heads in greeting. There are others where the 2nd lionness's eyes and face are visible, but there's not the same tenderness that there is here. I might post later on. I also have some of the cubs interacting with the male, which I will also post later.

Would love any comments to let me know if I'm moving in the right direction with this and will apply ideas to others in the series.

    1D4, 500mm f4 @ f5.6, ISO 800, 1/5000s.

PP - minimal. Crop for composition. Contrast balancing and sharpening.

    Thanks!

    Ed

Hi Ed, lovely 'greeting' interaction of the two lionesses, the light also works nicely and has helped the whites. Composition works and I like the fact they are moving in a diagonal manner. Good detail and the light has illustrated the power physique of these beasts. You could adjust the whites in levels to around 243, that's just before it clips, but no big deal, likewise just blending the dark green bush top right. Did you need ISO800 based on the SS? You must have excellent gardeners, BKG looks well manicured .

Nice sight, look forward to more from the series.

    Cheers

Lovely shot and what a wonderful thing to experience for your wedding. Makes it all the more memorable... if that's possible for a wedding

BIG congrat's on your wedding as well ED!
Really nice head rub greeting in good light as well, I'm hoping the grass will be this short for my 2 week trip to SLNP next week, although I'm not holding my breath!
Maybe our paths will cross, I'll be @ Chikoko bush camp (will need a panga there!) then Tafika to catch up with Patrick B and for more microlighting with John.

Hi Ed congrats to your wedding from me either.
Lovely grooming scene of the two , good light and colors , like wise the framing a tad more space all around would not harm the image .
I would try to open up the eye area a fraction to pull some more detail. Good suggestion by Steve with the levels adjustment. brings a bit more life into the scene.

    Hi Edward

Congratulations with the big step from me too.

My only suggestion is to have bit more light/detail in the leading lioness's eye.

    Stunning image and moment captured!

Thank you all for suggestions. I have been offline for a while.

Steve - agree that I could probably lift the whites a little - I think that might be my screen or my preference as that is often suggested on my images. Will look again at the green bush - hadn't seen it - thanks. I do usually leave the ISO at 800 and then work upwards when needed since the noise is so minimal at 800 anyway. However, 1/5000s is clearly way too much for this and could probably have dropped to 400. Then again, the cubs were running around and I might have been glad of it another time.

Marc - hope you are having fun at Chikoko. There won't be many short grass plains but the areas along the river are pretty good already. Hope PB is in good form - saw him a few weeks ago. Say hi from me.

Andre and Andreas - good idea with the lionesses eye. I will try to lift a little without going too far. There is also another image in the sequence where both faces are visible. As part of the sequence, it looks great as you can see the preceding and following images, but standalone it's not so good I don't think. Reluctant to post as comments will be the same and boring for everyone else, so perhaps I will be permitted to post on this thread in small version to illustrate. No comments required - just to make point (I think it's oversharpened too - sorry!)

Will get onto all the other images now - they look great from the thumbnails that loaded just now!

    Thanks again.

    Ed
