    Default Serengeti stormfront

For those that have visited the open plains of the Mara and Serengeti would have most likely witnessed storm fronts that sweep across the open savanna creating epic scenes of drama with varying degrees of lighting conditions.
On this late afternoon we witnessed this massive storm front brewing across the plain.

We do have gnu grazing here albeit fairly small in the frame and I'm hoping one still would call this an animalscape of sorts.

Nikon D700 24-70 f/2.8 1/320s f/16 ISO800@ 24mm. standing on the roof of the vehicle, cropped for levelling and pano framing. PS CC ACR levels, curves and luminosity masks. left a small amount of noise in the sky to keep more detail.

    Cheers
    Marc

Now you're making me miss those plains! Yes, a wilde closer to the camera would have lended some nice scale to this, but it's still very nice as posted.
Good handling of the tonal range. I would tone down brightest FG patches with a slight lumo mask, and perhaps tease some more drama from the clouds with selective LCE/Nik Tonal Contrast.

I had played around with the sky/clouds for quite a while and went wth Nik at one stage, but kept going back to Tony Kuyper's Lumo actions for this, but yes I could have worked on that sliver of bright white a little more, it's a fine balance trying to keep
enough detail whilst keeping noise to a minimum.

Really lovely image and really nice tone through out the image. Very nice drama in clouds and agree with morkel regarding trying to get a little more out if the in the top regions, however they do look good as it too.

Very original Marc, and I love the way those overwhelming skies dominate this landscape peppered with life! Very original and so impressive at the same time, I am enjoying this month's theme and posts, looking desperately for something to contribute with and sadly nothing near as impressive as this - congratulations Sir!

Kind regards, have a great week-end,

Hi Marc like all about this frame , great open landscape ,even greater sky and a few animals placed nicely in the wide open.
Like the colors , specially no cast bugs me , really nice work well done .

I tried to follow suggestions by the others about sky /FG with my RP , wonder if you like this or is it too much ? Like to know your thoughts.

I did the following edits. Bg copy - apply image (multiply to the FG) masked with the red channel and brushed it in.
Merge visible - apply image (green channel in overlay ) - applied green channel from BG as layer mask
Copy the layer - applied the inverted green channel from BG as layer mask
Group the two layers - add inverted layer mask and paint in the drama to the sky

Final touch with contrast action at low opacity

Took me longer to write this than the edit

    Cheers Andreas

Mark the tec bits have been covered above, this certainly is one dramatic image that must have been great to witness.

Love the sky, all I can add is that you must rush back to your campsite to tighten tent ropes, re-plan your braai for supper, get in tent and open a bottle of Merlot...

Hi Marc - a nice expanse and animalscape that captures the rainy season in the Mara well. I'm with Morkel on trying some LCE on the clouds but trying to keep the noise in check too.

    Rachel

The sense of scale here is fantastic - love it. I think it's worth persevering and trying to get a bit more detail in that sky as then it'll be a winner.
