    Default Hippos at sunset

    Attached Images Attached Images

Photographed on the Chobe River, Botswana from the specialized photo boat. The boat is moving & swinging in the current, your position in relation to the sun & hippos is always changing, the sun is quickly sinking and the hippos are everywhere but exactly where you want them! And then you want them to do something. And then if they do something, you don't want other hippo shapes in the way. However it was still a fantastic time. Here is the best of my efforts.

    Canon 1DX, Canon 400 DO f4 IS, 1/800, f8, ISO 1250.

    Comments and critiques most appreciated.

Hi Nancy, a lovely setting for the hippo interaction and a different 'scene setting' from other posting. Both techs & PP also look good, although I personally might just drop the exposure a fraction on the brighter yellow via a selective adjustment.

Great mood Nancy - yes it's a bit frustrating when the current moves the boat and the hippos also don't cooperate, that's the challenge, overcoming those odds to make an image
Agree with Steve, but I would actually crop closer and lose the bright yellow on the RHS totally?
I wish their poses were a bit more etched out if you know what I mean.

Love the mood this setting is delivering here Nancy, I do agree that the orange/yellow is a tad over saturated, and shame that there is another hippo just in front of this duo,
but can totally understand that you could have stayed there ALL evening and come away with zilch.

Nancy I take on board the above comments but I must say I personally would be thrilled to bits with this lovely image.

Hi Nancy, great image and lovely colors very well captured. I agree on toning down the yellow a little on the rhs or alternatively cropping it out completely. Although I really like the colours and drama in the water and sky, the strip of land going through the middle of the image doesn't do it for me, but that just my personal taste. Perhaps a crop from the bottom to loose some FG and then adding some more sky if you have it would work nicely, possibly even a pano crop just loosing some FG.

Was as great meeting you and spending some time with you on the river, even if it was only one day, hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.

    Hello Nancy,

Just had this thought as I opened the thumbnail for this lovely image: "what about next month's theme- Silhouettes?" This image fits in well with both animalscapes and silhouettes, such a familiar scene to me yet always special, love what you captured here, I tend to agree with comments regarding saturation on yellows on the RHS and I would go with the easiest fix suggested by Morkel above. Great variety in your recent posts Nancy, you made the best of every sighting on this magic trip, I am enjoying each and every post, thank you!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

    Hi Nancy
Looks like a couple of us have been up there recently. Unfortunately none of mine turned out ok so well done for something here.

Thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions. Here is a repost cropping away the yellows, adding a few points of black plus adding cyan to the reds, in selective color in PS.
