Last night on the Discovery channel a photographer was using a Canon HDTV camera with an interesting 80X zoom lens. Google came up with some interesting specs on Canon's site. Sorry its for HDTV cameras only :)

HJ40x14B IASD-V Portable Super Telephoto Lens

Focal Length 14-560mm F2.8 and 28-1120mm with the flick of a switch with the built in 2x Extender

    80X zoom!!!!

    IS of course

    Weight 12 lb (5.5 kg)

BH has it listed for $ 66,999.95 but sorry the lens is special order

    BHPhoto

Heres a PDF for the lens:

    http://www.canon.com/bctv/products/pdf/HJ40ex10_14B.pdf

If that is just not enough Canon also makes a 9.9-930mm F1.7 lens (!!!) that is 18.6-1860mm with the built in 2X. Sorry I couldnt find a listing at BH for this one.

    9-900 PDF

    Lens Model Name XJ100x9.3B IE-D
    Zoom Ratio 100x
    Built-in Extender 2.0x
Range of Focal Length (with Extender) 9.3 - 930mm
    18.6 - 1860mm
Maximum Relative Aperture (with extender) 1:1.7 at 9.3 - 296mm

I like the built in 2X extender feature of these HDTV lenses. I would like to see Canon offer this type of extender for DSLR super telephotos that could flip in and out of position but remain installed on the lens.

Pretty interesting. With such a 80x zoom one will never need to change lenses. I saw the BBC team using a Panasonic HDTV camera with Canon zoom lens. We just acknowledged each other, looked at each others equipment and moved on. I was wondering about their shooting angle so could not read what lens they were using. The Tiger was relaxing in a grassland in the open and they were shooting in a position where the light was about 120-145 degree to them. I shot at about straight in front of the tiger with side lighting (when the light was about 70-80 degress coming from my right) and then I moved on and shot few shots when the light was on my back.

    14-560mm F2.8 : OHH MY GODDDD. I can't believe it.

Robert: Thanks for this interesting info.
