    Default Warbler ID Request

This late season warbler landed in my yard yesterday morning dressed in cryptic attire. I was leaning toward Yellow-rumped, but the classic identifying characteristics were not visible. Your expert help will be most appreciated.

    Regards,

    Jonathan

This is a female American Redstart, Jonathan. The yellow on the upper and under tail feathers is a big clue, along with the faint yellow wingbar.

Thank you, Kind Sir. I had overlooked that one as a possibility, forgetting what they looked like - especially the female. I saw my first and only one almost three years ago.

    Regards,

    Jonathan

This bird has a dark head and even darker cap, where female American Redstart is usually an even soft gray. I think this is a first spring male rather than a female. If you saw it singing, that would certainly clinch it.

Looks best for a first Spring Male to me too.
