Hi Tim, this is a tough image to pull off since the fawn was in the shadow of a large tree and bright light behind. You had dapple light on the fawn and the exposure was good there, very sharp, good colors, eye contact. The FG is a bit distracting, but there isn't much you can do there. Loi

Thanks for your comments. My options were limited as the tree branches protecting the fawn we're very close to the ground. The fawn was only a few hours old and didn't change positions, so my only angle of view was nearly ground level with the fawn backlit. This was definitely one of those times where I had to capture the moment as best I could while mama was still away.

Hi Tim i like the image content and the comp and i am fine with the FG , not distracting to me.
What bothers me a re the colors / contrast and the very obvious recovered HL`s.
Would be good to see the raw ……. to make some suggestions for improvement.
Btw the light situation must have been difficult.

The light is harsh and that of course, it just the reality of that time of day and situation. Tough to photograph and tough to process. You did well to obtain an image without any vegetation in front of the fawn, and that top branch adds a nice protective feeling.

Very touching image Tim, I really like this. Thought I would dare make a suggestion: how about a Black and White conversion? I am quite sure it would work well.
Lovely detail in the fur and such sweet pose from this delicate little Fawn. Should you stick with the colour version, you might try desaturate the greens and yellows and a luminance layer would be perhaps beneficial to reveal the muzzle a bit. There's a lot more you can do here Tim, not sure what software you are using and what to suggest further, certainly a keeper, just needs a few magic touches
Kind regards,

Thanks Nancy. I only had a few minutes with this one ... mama was on her way back to pick up her newborn!

Thanks Gabriela. I will try your suggestions and see if I can work this to a better state. All the best - Tim

Nice job of capturing those long, lanky legs! The bright strip looks a little unnatural but the image looks pretty good overall to me. Perhaps a touch of lightening on the face and reducing the blue/cyan of the ground.
