I've been practicing hand holding the 500L I.
It's really tough on the arms, but results are definitely better than with tripod. I only have a 6D body at the moment; it's a real slowpoke but I think this one is a keeper.

    Thanks for suggestions and critique.

Kester, it is a keeper for sure. Good job hand holding that rig, pretty sharp and good exposure. The image feels a bit tight all around to me, if you have room, a bit more room would be nice. Is there a reason you shot at f9? Given the multi-color BG, you may be better off shooting at say f5.6 IMHO. Loi

Definitely a keeper, I agree with Loi above regarding the need for more room around the subject and would love to see this BIF shot at 5.6 or 6.3 - just imagine what the BG would look like, smooth and soft and all these lovely colours! Looking forward to more from you, I so like these Skimmers, would love to have a chance to photograph them one day...

    Kind regards,

Kester, It's worth putting up with the pain to get results like this. I totally agree with the two previous comments. Great pose.

Nice looking banking pose. I like the HA and the wing position. The detail looks a little off to me, especially in the head. Maybe from a large crop?
Good point made by Loi and Gabriella about shooting at wide open or close to it. Not only will it create a more pleasing BG but you will be able to shoot at faster shutter speeds.
I remember when I first started HH a big lens. I used to go shoot Tern for hours then be sore for days afterwards. I thought I had ruined my shoulder at one time, but after time and learning good technique, I can now HH a big lens for quite some time. You will too, just keep getting out there and work thru it.

Thanks, it was a significant crop.
I reprocessed and added more room
