Default Giraffe Family On Duba Plains

Well, someone has to kick off this month theme. One of my favorites from the recent trip. The road was flooded so high that our safari Land cruiser had to be submerged to follow the herd. We were stuck in the mud and were crawling at a snail pace, couldn't keep up with them. Then when we were just about align with them, the second vehicle surged passing ours from the inside and spooked the herd. the head and body angle was not ideal, but this was the best shot I got of the family. I debated whether to crop tighter, but at the end left as presented. Took a sliver off the top and right.

Very nice composition with the water and grasses in the foreground and then the nicely arrayed giraffes and finally up to the sky with nice puffy clouds. The lighting is so crisp and clean and the giraffes stand out very nicely. Darn about that other vehicle causing the giraffes to turn away.

Hi Loi nice landscape but unfortunately i do find the turned away giraffes makes this not very attractive to me.
Overall it is lacking tone /color and contrast , specially after looking at Morkel`s elescape. I know it is not right to compare , different time /location etc. but i had this in my memory .

Hi Loi - I love watching giraffes move. Unfortunately the head and body angles are a problem here. I'll again leave color and contrast to the others since I am still away.

Nice opening 'theme shot' Loi, like the inclusion of the water in the FG. Initial thoughts were to perhaps bump up some saturation, think a CP filter would have been a good addition here. Wish they were not walking away from you sadly.

Very nice Duba habitat here Loi, agree on giraffe exit, rather than entry point and saturation boost.

    Hello Loi,

Been so busy admiring your avian images, I only saw this now. Thank you for sharing the story behind the image- I understand your circumstances better, nevertheless love this shot very much, I think it might benefit for a tad of saturation though. Sorry about the giraffe walking away from you; does not bother me that much, my eyes went to the little one running, trying to catch up with the big guys- lovely image Loi, thank you for this post!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Steve, i really bumped out on this trip with my CP filter somehow got greasy, dirty and couldn't be cleaned. Just threw it in a trash can and got a new one, will look at bumping the saturation later. Thanks. Loi

    Kind regards,
Gabriela, thank you for your comments. Glad to find you on the Avian one too. Honestly, I learn so much from here, Steve, Rachel, Morkel, Andreas, you, and others, and then I apply what I learn with the birds. Thank you all so very much! Loi

here is a RP with a bit more saturation and a little bi more detail extraction using Nik. I've been cautious regarding pushing the saturation, but for this kind of animalscape image, it does make the image pop. Not much I can do about the head angle and body of the giraffe though. thank you. Loi

Loi, I agree with most of what's said above - more punch in the sky via a polariser would have helped. I don't mind animals walking away in some cases - but then you need to have them walking towards something interesting...I have one where the giraffes are walking towards a rainbow in good light, and that works as there's more of a story there.
I'd crop this from the bottom, remove the water/marsh?

Hi Loi for sure an improvement your RP .Good job .
I have it slightly pushed further plus Morkel`s crop suggestion .
WDYT ? Maybe a tad too much but you get the idea.

    Cheers Andreas
