This is Shona for "the one who grazes in the sky". How appropriate! I discovered that giraffes can be difficult to photograph in order to get the whole body in the image and yet have it large enough to be more than part of the trees. Here is another approach I tried.

    Canon 1DX, Canon 600 f4 L IS (rented), 1/2500, f8, exp. comp. +2/3, ISO 800.

    Comments and critiques most appreciated.

Hi Nancy - Still away so will leave the color and contrast to others but an unusual giraffe comp and I think it works nicely. I'm undecided about whether the grasses at the bottom should stay or go. Let's see what others say.

    Rachel

The composition works well Nancy and the contrast with the bluewater is striking! I will clean out the grasses at the bottom and maybe be a less heavy on the contrast, especially the face... ;)

Hi Nancy, I also find it is difficult to photograph giraffe. You got this one at eye level, so that is great. I'm with Rudi for less contrast. Regarding the comp, I find myself wishing to see more of the body and the head turn a little bit more parallel so that you don't get heavy shadow. You may try to use Curves to lighten the shadow on the face a tiny bit. Loi

    Hi Nancy

Love the comp, with Rudi on losing the grasses.

Giraffe ALWAYS has a black eye, very difficult to get detail, the blue looks a bit unnatural.

Maybe go a bit down on contrast and sat, do a D&B layer?

Hello Nancy, and it is " Indlula Mithi" for Giraffe in the Zulu language around here, same translation

Great to know you took an interest in the local languages and I am sure you had an amazing holiday packed with sightings and lots of excitement!

Agree with comments above regarding contrast and saturation and I like the POV here and the elegant neck of the giraffe over blue waters, very original.

    Kind regards,

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I see now that the saturation is overdone. I was unsure about those bits of grass whether they gave a little foreground detail or were visually bothersome.

Hi Nancy agree about being difficult to get nice/great shots of this species . But you did well in capturing this and it looks good to me from the aesthetic POV.I might loose the grass in FG and reduce the overall contrast a fraction,. specially in the blacks.
I am fine with the saturation though, gives a velvia touch.

    TFS Andreas

Lovely composition here, i like the way you have chosen to compose the neck only while taking a drink
    eye looks clear
the grass i feel i may like more of it or none of it, this looks a bit between.( its finally our view)
i like the composition all the way

Lovely composition with the arching neck, Nancy. I like the colour contrast as well between the typical Chobe waters and the giraffe.
I would definitely clean up the grasses (well, you can clean them up if it fits your ethic, if mine I would crop them out).
