I went to Circle B Bar Reserve early this morning. A nice walk but a slow day for bird photography until this Great Blue Heron landed about twenty feet from me. I had to walk by the bird hoping it would not flush until I had the right angle for the light. When the sun was at my back I turned and got off two frames before the bird took flight.

Great capture, well done! I love the prey and the intent on this guy's face. A powerful image. I agree with Ron regarding a little more room at the top - an easy canvas extension if you are at the top of the original frame.
Very unique prey.
I like the wet, coiled neck and the tight comp.
The BG has a nice feel to it as well. There is an area behing the head that I would blend in a bit.
Good one,

Terrific behavior captured here, Joe. Looks like a young heron which makes it even more fun. Agree with Grace on smoothing out the BG just a tad...maybe a gaussian blur.
Hi Joseph, great detail on the heron, and thats a fair size meal he has there. The heron pops nicely from the BG. I realise you dont have more space top and bottom, but a vertical work have worked well in this.
Thank you all for viewing and commenting, it is greatly appreciated. To those who offered suggestions to make the image better I shall revisit the image.
