Default Auto Focus Range Question on long canon lens.

I was recently shooting at Magee Marsh where you will encounter birds at all sorts of different distances. I was constantly changing the switch for the two different focusing ranges (3.5 m to infinity, and 8 m to infinity) on my Canon 400mm D.O. lens. any suggestions on hone to avoid the constant switching.

setting it full range i.e. 3.5m-inf will cover the full range but it will make the AF slower. You have to decide which distance is more productive and set it to that. If you need fast AF, you have to set it to far range. If you are shooting small perched birds and can get closer than 8m set it to full range.

Actually having thought it through more the solution particularly at a place like Magee Marsh where the birds are in the foliage to to carry two cameras one with my 400 mm D.O. set at 8m to infinity and another camera with a 70-200 set to 3.5m to infinity.

With the 400 DO set to full focusing range pre-focusing manually will cut the time of initial AF acquisition.
